Description A dinofelis lying on a tree branch, baring it's sabers to a rival, maybe a bunch of scavengers. Dinofelis is Probably one of the predators that our own ancestors should have been frightened of.

The dinofelis and the tree for this work have been created by PS CS6 and Artrage. The background has been adapted from a photo.

I hope you enjoy it.

But weren't those machairodontids?

Machairodntinae is a subfamily of family Felidae. Tribe Metailurini belongs to the subfamily Felinae.

Were they then? According to Wikipedia, they're classified as machairodonts.

Are you sure?
According to Wiki:
Dinofelis is a genus of sabre-toothed cats (Felinae) belonging to the tribe Metailurini. They were widespread in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America at least 5 million to about 1.2 million years ago (Early Pliocene to Early Pleistocene). Fossils very similar to Dinofelis from Lothagam range back to the Late Miocene, some 8 million years ago.

I see. The thing is Wikipedia also classified the metailurini in the machairodont subfamily, on a seperate article.

Ooo, this is beautiful. It also seems quite detailed and not as blurry as some of your others. You did a good job with the lighting.

Fun fact,Dinofelis was probably the least of our ancestors worries, there were a lot of larger carnivores in Africa during the Pliocene such as the 800kg bear Agriotheirum, the massive short faced hyena Pachycrocuta witch was as big as a full grown lioness and the ferocious saber tooth cat Machairodus witch reached sizes comparable to a liger.

Leogon In reply to ThalassoAtrox [2014-09-02 06:33:38 +0000 UTC]

But none of others seems to be agile like a dinofelis.
Today, leopards are more of a threat to primates compared to lions.
