Description Well,well...And know here is the magestic American lion,Panthera atrox,or as some authors call it Panthera"leo" atrox. It is one of the most prominent big cats of Pleistocene and survived till 11000 years ago... It had really huge sizes,up to 1.2mΒ
at the shoulder and about 2.5m of head and body length.
The atrox here created by Artrage 4 and completed by PS CS6.

I've actually written a natural history alternative timeline about the American lion; its about what it would be like if the american lion had survived the Thaw.

mkmack12.deviantart.com/art/Ch…

I've similar ones of other species too(including some spec-evo ones), and plan to write more.

Funnily enough, I'm doing a portrait of an atrox myself, an ink drawing, but it's a bit more stylized, and i t includes a mane....I hope it isn't too much of a stretch, I mean, to put a slight one. But then the fact that its taxonomy is a bit confusing to me is what prompted this.I mean, is it Panthera leo atrox or just Panthera atrox?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leogon In reply to vasix [2014-03-16 07:28:08 +0000 UTC]

Well,as I said it's something of debate. Some scientists consider it a separate species and other classify it as a subspecies of Panthera leo.
The fact is its dentition and skeleton so much resembles those of modern lion but the size of animal and some minor differences in body and skull.Actually the skull is quite similar to a giant jaguar.
but more recent genetic studies showed that it was a sister species of Eurasian cave lion. So it would seem more probable that they had no mane.
I am looking forward to see your finished work of the Atrox.

Oh, well I scrapped the atrox in any case.Β  It was a massive paper, not even directly able to fit in a scanner. But I did start on a Smilodon portrait ...you probably won't be able to see any of my new pictures actually. The paper size is over 2 feet (my Columbian mammoth is 3.5 feet tall, 2 feet wide)
