I draw shadows on black manes, but that's because I use a base that's a bit lighter than a true black. That way the shadows give it more depth.

oh. i prefer to use jet black. don't know why, to me it adds emotion somehow. that shiny dark dark hair. like my sister's.

It will still turn out as dark as you want, as long as you draw lots of dark strands in the shadow layer. I suppose it would also work if you started with the shadow colour as a base, then drew the midtones and highlights on top. What can I say? I like the three-tone method!
