Description I painted and composited the opening shot for the latest diablo 3 cinematic. A tough and very complex matte shot. Every thing except the diablo character/FX is done by me.

Beautiful shot. I'm curious, is the detail on the architecture projected, or fully textured 3D?

Curious how you guys handled the re-projection of the clouds back into 3D space so convincingly. It looks good enough that I was sure the team had cranked out some RenderMan volume work for these shots.

I'm cracking my head open trying to understand how you managed to show the clouds from the top when Diablo flies down. Very nice painting, it looks even more stunning in the video.

I saw the 1hr long video with explanations on how they use the game screen as a canvas and how they want to not make the backgrounds overwhelming to the characters, so that they pop out. It's the kind of thing that I started studying with Ingres and his portraits that I really admire, but that I don't think is necessarily so noticeable as a skill in itself.

Art like this has on me the same effect some food has on some people, I just yearn to see more! Thanks so much for sharing!

Whoa, I really love the cutscenes in DIII.
Did you also work on the opening scene? I would really like to know how the 2d/3d fightscene in the intro-scene was made

far out man, you handled that whole shot yourself ? (minus diablo)

one of my favourite shots out of any of the cinematics. I was admiring it recently, not knowing it was yours.

wow dude, you must be really proud.

didn't know you were working for blizzard, did you work in Irvine at their headquarters? I was there at the launch on Pandaria and DIII.

So, 8 paintings for different stages of light? Did they achieve the lighting by gradually fading one painting into another?
Is Vue good for clouds, I've been meaning to try it out partially for this reason, but whenever I install it the interface is giving me a hard time.

Anyway, congrats again and much respect. When did you start painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

leventep In reply to xn3ctz [2012-12-10 01:36:01 +0000 UTC]

yup i was there till jun 16th. And yes that's how i put it together.Paintings morphed into each other for the light passes. But i split it up even more for depth and parallax movements.Plus shadows cast from the towers.

Vue is ok , it has potential but you never get results that are 100%, usually we ended up painting on top.It does crash more on mac if that's what you are using.

I would say vue is good at certain things, it can generate some nice fractal type environments, but for clouds you do have to play around a lot to get realistic results even then its just a base. Thanks . i started since i was 6

xn3ctz In reply to leventep [2012-12-10 10:50:07 +0000 UTC]

how was the blizz working environment? i saw that irvine(orange county in general) is a much better and beautiful city, compared to the rest of LA. i enjoyed the whole of LA, but all that driving kept driving me nuts.

did you use adjustment layers of exposure to creates the 8 plates or was it manually created? if so how did you manage to keep the exposure uniform?
when i look at your speedpaints i don't see a lot of anatomical construction in there, is that something you still use, or after a lot of practice you don't need to do it anymore?

thx for replying.

leventep In reply to xn3ctz [2012-12-10 18:02:44 +0000 UTC]

it was great, very inspirational.Irvine is nice but its like Durloc.i rendered 8 bases from vue, and then just painted in the extra realism, plus using as you said adjustmentlayers for all of the paintings. Well i build directly with the structures, so i dont construct in several steps

xn3ctz In reply to leventep [2012-12-10 20:03:57 +0000 UTC]

is not using anatomical construction something you can do after you have a lot of experience? i figure, after you get good enough at it, you can skip a couple of steps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

leventep In reply to xn3ctz [2012-12-10 21:44:35 +0000 UTC]

yep, thats why i build directly, i dont do the anatomical steps. Shape and light is all done in single strokes

The work is quite stunning, it is one of the more impressive things I found in Diablo 3. The High Heavens are some of the most beautiful work I have seen for a while.
