i still fail to see what is painted, what special brushes, what is texture, and how you managed to build your own rocket to bring your camera up there!
wonderfully done!!! <3

usually when it comes to clouds there are 2 major obstacles, edges from soft to hard and the volumetric lighting it has in the shape. So in order to create a nice alpha edge i extracted and created brushes from flat top down sattelite images of major hurrican storms. After that you just painted in the major cloud shapes and added in additional cloud detail from airplane shot images. The landmass alpha required hardedged brush.

thank you

O_o now this is a smart way to it! would have taken me a while to get the idea of making brushes from satellite pics!
but well, i still have to really understand how clouds work...

totally my pleasure, and thanks so much for the detailed explanation!

Ahhh mattes...

i have still a long way to go~

i love this. it's like they made a satellite take a photo and used it for the video.

it was commercial work, a bit hard to do streamline for that but i will be expanding my live stream to one day encompass compositing and grading

Your painting methods are my favorites!

I'm from Brazil and study your techniques by myself since 2009, and it has helped me a lot to create conceptart.

I wish I had seen the techniques used in this piece

leventep In reply to QAuZ [2013-01-04 13:44:19 +0000 UTC]

the most difficult part was actually the comp rather then the painting, with the earth rotation. I think the edit is to short to notice much of the correct movement. But since the commercial is around 90s there were tons of shots that needed to fit in.. Plus the final grade they put on is more purple ish
