for some strange reason I almost thought it was going to end with Sombra "giving something to remember him by" as in .. Luna! you're going to be an aunt! and I'm, not adopting this time.. (unless Cadance really is her daughter ..  and the show won't admit it..

I think he's a cool character as well. 

Headcanon on why his name is Sombra ("Shadow") is that, like a tree providing shade, he wanted both a shelter and a stronghold (provide for this) against the elements. 

Headcanon also is that he technically absorbed part of the good that was in the prime universe (good versions) of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. This is mostly because the arc established that, before balance was restored, nothing could happen to either Princess Celestia or Luna without either counterpart being affected the same way. I also say that it was the good in them that was partially absorbed (as opposed to the evil), since Sombra (in the end) seemed to still have a certain degree of free will. It may not be impossible that finding means to strengthen the good can assist in further recovery of free will. That, or I'm to figure out a way for a character not to be completely screwed by the elements.

Exactly! There is a good thing and bad thing about everything! Shadows can provide shelter and cooling, but they can also create the fear of darkness!

I too have come up with an idea for that. Your thought is good, but my best guess is that he didn't have his free will post absorption because he took some of the good out of Mirror Celestia and Mirror Luna, but because he had enough good in him to last him for the last few moments that he had left before the evil would eventually take over. If he were a normal unicorn pony, that would have taken him over almost immediately, but this Sombra is definitely no ordinary unicorn. Though I can't say what may happen next if IDW ever decides to return to this story, which I REALLY hope they do, I can at least come up with some more ideas. I have come up with a few already.

Unfortunately, there are some details that do indeed come with this territory.

1. Since the elements of harmony have good and evil effects when used (to maintain balance), this would technically classify them as weapons (since they have destructive potential, as seen in Equestria Girls). While this side hasn't as often arisen, this aspect also may be better respected and utilized as reason for the elements of harmony to be a last resort option (is the case currently, as all that would really change is acknowledging their use as carrying risk).

2. If the IDW story is looked at objectively, it does send quite a strong message that the outcome with Mirror King Sombra may be meant to be final. This isn't quite as much due to what happened with the elements of harmony as much as it being strongly established that neither Celestia, the Mane 6, nor many characters (possibly all) from their world can travel to the mirror universe without putting both of their worlds in great danger. Placing an ominous obstacle like that does seem to give the message that there isn't a desire for the two worlds to continue to interact. This would mean that, should Mirror Sombra return (I hope he does as well), the burden would fall upon those in the mirror universe alone. I've got to admit, the idea of an above average Derpy (if she's not dead), Princess alicorn Trixie (if she's not dead), judges Flim and Flam (if they're not dead), Chrysalis Queen of Love, and/or Captain Goodguy (um... is this version of Discord still good or did he switch orientation?) working with an Egyptian styled Celestia and a Greek styled Luna does sound quite engaging. 

We'll be seeing what happens.
