Description Probably once a year I do a self-portrait. I feel like this is the most accurate one so far, probably because for some reason I used to always exclude my glasses. They take up such a huge portion of my face and have become part of my comfortable identity. I feel like I look ridiculous without them, when they are pretty ridiculous on their own.

Here’s a cute story about my first pair of glasses.

I was in the sixth grade, and I chose a pair with big, thick lavender frames. I was never a fashionable kid, I just knew what I liked, but let me assure you that nobody thought I looked cool but me. The first day I wore them to school, we played volleyball in gym class. I had a terrible crush on a fifth-grade teacher named Mr. Byers, who was tall and blonde and had an A-plus smile and made everybody feel cool. He had a free period, I guess, and decided to come play volleyball with our class. He was wearing a sky-blue Oxford shirt and tucked his tie into it, between the buttons, which I thought was pretty sexy. He stood right opposite the net from me, gave me one of those killer smiles and said, “I really like your glasses.”

I pretty much fell in love.

You can! Don't let anybody tell you that you can't wear glass frames as an accessory. You rock what you want to!

Also, I have the same pair of glasses as you. Except mine are... what do you call it... tortoise? Basically it's just different shades of brown. I wore them to a carnival/fair-thing and earned myself a couple compliments because they were FREAKIN' AWESOME!

I love this. Your hair is so adorable, as is your story. I don't know how you manage to tell such interesting stories on top of being such an amazing artist. Your stories and comments are so honest and without fluff but always draw me in.

Is there a multiplication and division sign on your glasses?

Ha ha! There ARE math symbols on my glasses, but I'm a huge fraud because I can barely do basic addition in my head. ;D And thank you, I'm so glad you like my little stories. That was a cute one.

Lol - so you're representing as a math nerd but really you're an arts and crafts nerd. Once they make glasses with a piece of chalk on one side and knitting needles on the other, you'll be set. ^^

Um, holy shit. I have been gone from this site waaay too long since this is my first time seeing this.

Ma'am, you're lovely. Goodness, this has so much personality and vim to it. Also, not to sound like a creeper, but we look a bit alike - same face shape, same eyes, some hearty batch of freckles...and even the same(ish) glasses?! Jesus...

I wear contacts now mostly, but when I finally decided that glasses were actually pretty awesome, my mom and I went out shopping for a pair for both of us. She got some really snazzy apple green and red frames (sounds awful but they were really pretty) and I went straight for some thick, black framed specs. There's something so classy about a pair of nice glasses...

Also, your little story just made my heart puddle. I actually never had a crush on a teacher, but I imagine their just as heady as the ones I've gone through...

Aw, at least your first glasses were awesome ): My first glasses were icky Medicaid glasses; wire frame ovals. Uhhhgggg they were so ugly, and combined with my other fashion choices at the time, I started being called Harry Potter. Not very nice, considering I am a girl >__>

Also: I AM SO GLAD that glasses are starting to get really cool. I've always bitched that kids get the cool color frames XD

You look a lot like my mom. And I think that's why I've spent the last 5(??) years being simultaneously in love and just a little bit terrified of you. You seem a lot like her too, in an equal-but-opposite, left brained/right brained kind of way. I mean that in the sense that, like you, she is amazingly gifted, but she works her magic with numbers and just plain obsessive ambition in her career.

I'm spouting all this shenanigans because I follow your tumblr, and if I had a clue what I was doing on that website, (lol i don't) I would have liked to tell you in response to yesterday's blog about kit telling you you should have kids: Absolutely do it. do it now, do it 5 minutes ago. because as weird and creepy as it sounds (sorry, truth) there have been more times than I'd like to admit in the past 5 years where I've quietly turned to your blogs and artwork as a surrogate source for maternal support when my own mom was unavailable or I just didn't feel like bothering her with something. There needs to be more people like you and my mom raising kids, is what I'm saying.

I hope that meant something to you in a not-at-all-disturbing kind of way.

I've been thinking about this comment all day, and I have to tell you, it might be the most wonderful, heartwarming thing I have ever been told. I don't know how to express my thanks.

My mom's a go-getter, too, but she's pretty emotional. Also an artist, and I know I'm so, so much like her (except for being a go-getter). So I know how it is to have an amazing mom, and the fact that you ever feel like I'm in the same category of person just blows me away. I feel so incompetent and immature so much of the time, and only very recently have I felt like I could really handle the kind of responsibility and honor it is to raise a great kid.

It kind of makes me want to shout that you've felt this way for five years but haven't come and basically rapped at me. I understand feeling intimidated by artists you like (I feel that way ALL the time), but rest assured, you can always, always come and just talk to me about whatever, if you want to. I'm delighted that anybody wants my ear, and it's not creepy at all. It's an honor.

Thank you again. I honestly don't know what to say. It just makes me feel so, so good. It makes me feel like I could really be the person I want to be.

OMG, that story is so cute!
I keep thinking about how kids have such a narrow and stupid idea about what is cool, mostly because of the things my fourteen year old brother tells me. Anything that deviates from the norm in even the slightest way is uncool. The hem of your skirt had to be so short and the waistband had to be rolled down to your hips. Which was ridiculous because now high-waisted clothing is in fashion and I always thought that was the most flattering way to wear my uniform anyway.

Looks great!

I wear glasses as well. I have since I was 5. For much of my life, I chose big frames to hide my face. Since about halfway through high school, I've gradually gone smaller and I have occasionally wore contacts. But I prefer glasses most of the time.

I love your story about your lavender frames.

You are beautiful.
I am so jealous of those glasses. I always keep the 3d glasses from the movies and punch out the lenses so I can have just the awesome frames. I didn't need glasses until 7th grade and when I got them I didn't have the balls (or the want) for glasses that stood out. Now, I can appreciate having glasses that are are statement pieces. You caught on to this notion early. And what girl DIDN'T have a crush on a teacher at some point? My fifth grade teacher was mine, he was young and attractive but had hip problems because of how active (or stupid) he was and and used a cane because of it. It gave him so much swagger, though I'm sure that wasn't his intention at all.

Great story! It's interesting how glasses become part of your identity after a while. I got my first set of glasses in tenth grade and the only response i remember getting was from my short, stout, not really attractive volleyball coach who just said "So that's why you where always squinting. I just thought you where mad at me."

I am totally jealous on that story because I got glasses as an adult and I *still* hate them and don't wear them all the time as I should. No dude ever told me he likes them, so. (maybe I should get new awesome ones?... probably lavender?!)

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but my first pair of glasses were a fake display pair. All my friends were getting glasses and I wanted a pair too, even though I didn't need them. I wore those fake pair like they were real. Of course I jinxed myself and now I have to actually wear glasses, but I have some rocking frames, so it's all cool.

And I like the multiplication and division symbols on your frames. ;D

Abso-bloody-lutely love this. You're so incredibly beautiful in every way.

PS. Mr Byers sounds like a pretty rad teacher!

I had a crush like that when I was at school. He was a history teacher, happy and funny and kind with wavy, red hair -- I mean, red; ginger red -- and he was fantastically tall with a winning, mischievous grin. He was almost driven out by the student body's perception of his vaguely nerdy appearance. They were so unbelievably cruel, and my heart ached for him.

One day I went to ask for a copy of a handout I'd lost, and found him packing up his belongings. I asked him why he was leaving, and he answered that he didn't feel like he fit in there. I told him, rather shyly, that I'd be really sorry to see him go, and that personally I always thought that red was a wonderful hair colour and that he always looked particularly good in green. He laughed, I squirmed, the handout was received and I shot like a bullet out of there. The next day, there he was for my history lesson, as planned, belongings in their rightful homes, and he was wearing a gorgeous, olive green waistcoat over his shirt that I'd never seen him in before. It was sort of shiny material, but not obnoxiously so, with a light paisley pattern, and he looked stunning. He handled the fuckwits in my class like a boss that day. (:
