Thank you!!! I struggle with the painting of the tails. I love irridescent scales and I know I missed it here. But next time I'm going to nail it!

Neptune holds onto her 'toys' while she holds onto the staff.
She dashes and splashes and demands gimme... gimme gimme...
Neptune reminds her she needs her voice... her beautiful voice... not just any voice.

Thank you. Eyes are my favorite area. I think that's what makes all the difference in how much soul a piece has.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. You are right. I do put myself into my sculptures. I'm not an artist type person but I do feel very expressive with the clay.

I buy all of my supplies online. I would suggest it. polymer clay alley, gertrudes gifts, joggles, and ebay has everything you would need to make the dolls. Order it online and it all comes right to your door.
I do sell. People contact me for commissions which start at $200, from various galleries such as this one and I have weekly auctions up on ebay which start at $125.

I use a polymer clay called puppen fimo. I use the transluscent color mixed with a flesh tone fimo classic clay. The first thing I do is make a under skeleton out of a 18 guage wire or copper tubing. Then, I weigh out the clay for the body parts and start adding the clay over the armature.
For hair I use mohair or viscose. You have to be really careful with the viscose because there's a lot of crap out there. There is an artist here who actually sells the best stuff in small or large quanties. Her name is Clare from Fairytasia I think. I cut the hair into small locks and I apply it with glue to the scalp. I think Clare also has instructions for application. I paint with very diluted genesis heat set paints. It typically takes 4-8 coats of paint to get the effect that I want.
It takes a long time to make the dolls. Factoring bake times, armatures, wigging, dressing and painting, it takes a long time. In the end, it still depends on the doll and my mood. It seems as though some dolls just can't wait to pop out of the clay and their creation is so magical. Others need a bit of coaxing.
All in all, it's worth it. It's very satisfying to start with a nondescript formless lump of clay and end with a magical little creature.

Sometimes, I'm good when I finish the doll. Those are usually the dolls that I keep. Most of the times, I only feel the satisfaction of being done when the dolls are in the mail on their way to their new home.
Polymer is awesome because it bakes at 265-275 depending on the brand. I have a glass cake pan that I tent with foil due to fumes and residue that polymer releases and I bake it in my oven. After the doll is baked I paint. I use heat set paints so I have to shoot the paint with a heat gun or embossing gun to set them.
And you are welcome.
