CRACKPOT THEORIES AHOY!So, you know the professor's lab? What happened to the professor? MAYBE Francoeur didn't start out as a flea! PLAUSIBLE? Vaguely. Mostly this came from the thought that a giant flea putting on a hat, scarf, and coat (his first 'disguise') is kinda... odd. I'd think if he'd always been a bug then he wouldn't feel the need to wear clothing, and probably wouldn't think to try to pass as a human. Buuuut maybe that's just me over-thinking things. One of the main flaws in this theory (IMO) is that Francoeur acts a bit too... naive and curious to have once been human. UNLESS HE ALSO GOT AMNESIA. Haaaaa but seriously, no, I do not believe my crackpot theory is anything close to what the actual movie has in store for us.
Personal Ramble:
Quick drawing, cuz I've been super busy and haven't had time to draw anything. Well, nothing for FUN, anyway. Work is fun but it's still work, and more importantly, it's not Francoeur. :3
I wanted to make fanart for this movie for awhile, but as I said, things have been busy. And... not in the fun way. More in the "company I work for (and love) is struggling to stay afloat and after putting in a ton of extra hours and not being paid for a month we didn't make ends meet and yesterday I filed for unemployment" way.
I say this because listening to Le Seine and thinking about this movie have been a major uplift in this time of crisis... So I'm still going to try to make it out to the Toronto film festival to see it. Fortunately I'm in Michigan so it's not TOTALLY infeasible. :3

I HAD THE SAME IDEA TOO!!!
Okay, first, I thought Francoeur was maybe like Eric or Quasimodo, that maybe he was some mysterious man who was born deformed, grew into a colossus, and ironically developed a refined taste for things like books, philosophy, and art.
Later, I thought he was the professor, and that Raoul had never seen him in person because he isolated himself, especially when I saw him slip the note underneath the door. Then, when I learned that was Charles, I thought he was trying to get Raoul to leave the same way Cogsworth tried to get Maurice to leave the Beast's castle.
When the explosion happened and Emile saw the monster, I thought that was surely Raoul who had accidentally turned himself into a monster. Imagine how weird it would've been to hear Francoeur say in Raoul's voice "What are you screaming at? Emile, it's just me!" And then, that would be followed by some tragic mirror-breaking scene where Raoul is distraught by how he's no longer his handsome ol' self. Then, when he first meets Lucille, it would be like "Beauty and the Beast" meets Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"!

You really think so?
Half the time, it's because I let my imagination think up the story that I decide I want to see certain animated movies. And the other half, I want to see it because the mystery and vague-ness make it interesting in it's seeming simplicity.
Overall, as interesting as my ideas may be, I am simply happy with the real plot of the movie.
By the way, is it me or is your username a shout out to the voice actress "Grey Delisle"?

Honestly, that is a really cool theory. It'd be a cool twist, especially if they are going for a sort of 'Beauty and the Beast' kind of them in their plot. Also, you did raise some really good points. It'd also explain how he'd be able to talk/sing.
Though, I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that the professor is possibly the monkey in an experiment gone wrong. (Or the monkey was their assistant.) Though, I'd actually like your theory to be true.
