Description 18x24" 45x60cm acrylic on hardboard

Last week's painting(s) of the week. Always blame the board (or canvas) when it doesn't cooperate and you can't get anything to turn out. There's a dozen ideas on this board that didn't turn out. We settled for the remains of them.

I love the texture on this one....I think it looks rather abstract...in a very good way!!!
Of course it does look very tiny on my phone...but what do you think????

Texture and desperation. I was already a day late on my one painting a week deadline, and after a dozen different ideas that didn't work, I just started stripping the various layers away, gave it a name to suggest something and brazenly posted it. Β Not a favorite, but it is interesting to see how the various brushstrokes and such come out as you work your way down through the layers. It was something I did on my real abstract paintings.

Those are the ones on pg 5 of my gallery. They're an "art project" for me, rather than my art. I actually started to do one of those on this piece, but gave up on that too.

I'm giving up a lot at the moment, so you'll have lots to choose from.

It has lots of textures from lots of failures, which is pretty much what I found interesting.

That's exactly my first thought. A lot of interesting textures.
And how's delph-ambi Β catched, really fabulous lights.

Fabulous light. Beautifully balanced picture. Something very satisfying about this one.

Well, I more or less surrendered and posted it just to show what you can do on a piece of hardboard instead of a canvas. After spending a week with this one, I'm going to be sticking with small pieces for a while. Little ideas, little boards.

I tend to think that becoming adept in art is often about knowing when to stop and leave a painting be. So, in this case, well done for stopping at the right place. Is this close to what you first saw in your mind, or did you end up going where the paint led?

Well, on this one, I stopped painting a dozen times on a dozen different scenes and abstract ideas, and in the end used some water to soften the layers of paint and attacked it with a razor blade, scraping down through all those layers until I'd something that vaguely resembled one version or another of an earlier idea and said the heck with it. I did add a bit of burnt sienna when all is said and done to highlight the buildings and such, but otherwise it's just layers of paint form different pictures partially excavated.Β

An interesting progression to a lovely effect.Β

Thanks. My interest in this piece is how the various layers of paint highlight the various layers of paint underneath them. There was at least a dozen layers of paint on this that I scraped down through to reveal the vague outlines of one of the scenes the abandoned scenes. I probably would've painted over this again, but decided this was likely the best I'd be able to do at the present.

I never would have guessed it. Β The final image as I see it on my screen looks good, and that's all that counts for now I guess.
