Description I recently had a book on Russian landscape paintings out from the library and it featured several moon-lit or night paintings, I believe by Issac Levitan, that used greens for the night sky, so I thought what the heck... (And thus the title of this piece.)

12x16" 30x40cm acrylic on hardboard

Sorry to take so long getting back to you: ever since they redesigned the message page a year or so ago, I miss so many messages.

Anyways, this is from my imagination -- I regret the stone fence. I read War and Peace this summer, along with Russia Against Napoleon and I seemed to gather that stone fence lines are not a Russian country side feature, but oh, well...

wow, completely out of the blue, my VERY first thought upon seeing this was 'night on bald mountain.' I don't know how to explain that haha
Then it was immediately followed by flashes of old movies that brought back a warm, but at the same time, cold nostalgia.
When I look at a painting, I always see it for what it is first, not for what it represents. I see colours first, then forms, followed by subjects/context etc..I usually don't have such a strange immediate reaction to a painting...

It is interesting how the color of the sky affects one's feel for the scene. I should play around with the image in Gimp just to see how changing the color of the sky would affect the feel of the painting...

A curious piece, though it looks more like dusk than moonlight to me, The greens offset the
feel of night, Would never have thought of using green tho, ( Still, i've seen artist use green
for outer space, Now thats original!)

I tried a bigger piece with a green sky and it didn't work, so this might be a one shot deal. The original ended up a bit darker than the web image, more night like. I did notice the sky was rather green just after sunset the other day, but a different kind of green... Maybe the green sky was just a fluke in the way the painting was reproduced in the book -- I've noticed how the colors of painting change drastically from book to book...(or web page to web page...)

It indeed evoke the image of nighttime >< Probably because of the dark ground ? Nevertheless, green does look good for night scenes (I would never think of that before !)
