Description I guess it takes more than one watercolor to scare me... it probably takes two. This is my second one.

The great thing about doing winter scenes, for me, in watercolors is that all the white snow separates the colors and keeps the painting from getting too muddy, which is a problem for me in this media as the colors and values seem to often run together.

I develop these scenes with small thumbnail sketches and then try to scale them up to full size line drawings on scrap paper (2 - 4 typing sheets taped together). This is the hardest part -- scaling up the lines to make it look right. When I'm happy with what I have, I tape this 'blueprint' to the back of my watercolor paper (or canvas) and trace out the lines using a light box. This allows me to make changes from the blueprint to the final version -- re-position the image, refine the image, even condense or eliminate parts. It also allows me to repaint the scene as often as I like without having to redraw anything.

This and my previous watercolor are taken from larger 18x24". 45x60cm 'blueprints' that I have painted before. I don't believe I ever painted a full version of the previous watercolor, but I did a small summer scene using that blueprint, and today's comes from a blueprint I used for a fall painting.

LOL Chuck! Good stuff! I use a lighboard too, Though mostly to correct mistakes like
i did with SFII "SharkSmiles." I had to redraw the whole thing!

Translating the lines of a 2" sketch into a 18x24" drawing is hard work -- I'd chew up the good paper with all my erasing just to get them looking right. Sketching on good paper is simply not an option for me. Besides, look at all the work it is saving me now...

Understood, I'm the opposite alas,
I keep thinking i need more drawing
paper, everytime i go to an art store
i buy paper thinking i forgot to buy
some, I've got all kinds all over
the place and barely use a fraction of it, I only really need Watercolor,
Drawing paper and Bristol board vellum like the comic artist use, Oh
well better to have more than less.

try less lines especially on the snow.

Thank you -- the lines are just a crutch until I get the hang of these things again -- I should be able to paint a picture without having to use black lines to sharpen everything up. I hope.

I usually use a red pencil or a watercolour pencil for the guide lines. That way when I'm done the lines don't stand out as much or not seen at all ;D

I think you'll be there in no time

A watercolor pencils work well in that you can erase it with just water. The only problem is that sometimes in painting, you don't cover up the line, or cover it up without erasing it and you are stuck with it, so that picking a color to use can be rather critical. Right now I'm using a light blue, but I wonder if white would show up just enough...
