Description
A tingling sensation was all she could feel right now. Elated and tipsy, Solah laughed and sang along with the rest of the women as they clumsily took turns at singing karaoke in front of the television, or ‘magic box thingy’ as the others now called it. It was comforting to finally be in the jolly and untroubled company of her female companions again, even if it was just for the night. It had been what felt like an eternity since they had gathered together like this. Well, harmoniously at least.
She tilted back on her stool leaning one arm on the bar for support, sipping from her martini glass and subconsciously smiling to herself. As she cast a gaze over her cheerfully drunk friends, she wondered how much they would remember come morning and chuckled under her breath at the thought.
“I’ve got to say, you haven’t disappointed.” Destiny stammered, almost falling into the stool next to her as she approached her friend. The princess was always well composed so it was unusual and almost funny to see her this way.
“When do I ever?” Solah replied with a cheeky smirk, lifting her glass up in front of her. Destiny too raised hers up, filled with the strongest beer they could find in the chameleon’s supply, in toast as the two brought the glasses together with a clink.
The two chugged their drinks down and then returned their gaze to the rest of the girls in the conjoining living area. Karaoke wasn’t the easiest when it was in a language in which a few in their group were still fairly new to. Though no one at their gathering, with the exception of Quay, could actually read the English lyrics popping up on the screen, most of them were still able to sing along to the songs they’d grown accustomed to hearing frequently since their time on Earth. The twins were currently marvelling in the spotlight with way too much enthusiasm, which was apparently contagious as the rest of the group seemed to be highly spirited and dancing along. Or maybe it was just all the booze.
They couldn’t seem to get enough of the stuff. She noticed many empty glasses around the room and knew it was time for more. Hopping off her stool and placing her glass down, she eased around the bar and searched through her readily available stash, which had been quickly diminishing all night, to grab out another two bottles of ‘who even cares what’.
She held the bottles up in the air as she strutted towards the group. “Another round ladies?”
Most of the girls quickly responded with enthused chants and ‘woos’. As Solah poured more alcohol for the ladies one by one, she came to Electra who had been sitting quietly on the edge of the couch. With a smile the wolf put her arm up to decline the drink offer.
“Should’ve known you wouldn’t be the party type.” Solah remarked with a tilt of her head and a friendly smile.
Electra’s eyes fluttered shut for a moment before returning the smile. “Not tonight.” Came her reply, waving a hand at the chameleon, “One of us has to be able to keep you all in check, plus actually be able to remember something come morning.”
Solah chuckled, knowing more than well enough how zombie-like the behaviour of a few was going to be over the coming days. She turned back to see one less guest in the room, undoubtedly they were outback where she had told anyone to go if they needed to hurl. There was no way she was going to clean up after anyone if they’d been sick in the house.
She made her way back to Destiny and placed the remaining bottles on the bar top. Taking a seat back on the stool having poured one last drink of her own, it became apparent right then that she may not feel the liveliest come morning either.
“Any idea what the time is?” Destiny questioned her. She simply shrugged her shoulders in reply, unwilling to look at the clock which she was sure would read one of those hours between late night and early morning, where she would be unsure whether or not to call the night quits or to linger on through tomorrow drowsily. Making that decision was not a card she wanted to play, so instead she took a sip from her glass and fought back the urge to give up drinking tonight.
Thinking about the time would only lead her thoughts to other things that had been bothering her of late. She didn’t want to think. That’s what the alcohol is for.
Solah had become accustomed almost ceremoniously to drinking since being introduced to the toxin when she first came to Earth. Not to this extent though. The last time she had was…When was it? The memory came back to her hazily but enough for her gut to sink at the thought. That’s right. When bloody Camelio was with that new little lass.
Rubbing her temples with her palm, she quickly tried to withdraw the thought before she could think about how much it had riled her to see him with someone else, finally beginning to give up his obsession and clinginess towards her. But too late.
“What’s troubling you?” came Destiny’s soft voice, her hand coming to rest on Solah’s arm almost startling her. The princess could always read her so easily, without even having to look into her mood ring behaving eyes. It was more than that though. She could see through her as if to read her mind sometimes. Destiny knew more about her than anyone and sometimes it felt okay to open up to her, but just not right now.
With a shake of her head, she looked pointedly into the half empty glass in her hand, “Nothing this can’t fix.”
“I’m not so sure. Solah there’s no need to hold it in, come on. We don’t hold secrets from one another.”
As much as she wanted to try and avoid it, she knew she couldn’t, or at least in her heart. Oh how she hated yet appreciated how right Destiny was. “I’ve just got many a thing on my mind right now. Between Pinta’s constant attempts to push my buttons, difficulty with workloads, bloody men-”
She didn’t finish the statement, because as soon as the last words came out she couldn’t think of any of the other things that were bothering her. To be honest, none of the other things had been bothering her, at least recently.
Destiny’s hand glided up and down Solah’s arm in a comforting manner, “Camelio?”
“Uh-huh” she responded, taking another gulp from her drink almost as an immediate reaction to the admission.
“Well tonight you don’t have to worry about him or those troubles.” Destiny stated, removing her hand from Solah’s forearm and picking her drink back up from the bar and downing the last of the contents in one swift chug. “Tonight we forget about all of that and we celebrate our happy family reunion by being our, as you might say it, gorgeous bloody selves.”
Solah couldn’t help but laugh at her friend’s use of the word. After walking around the other side of the bar and refilling both of their drinks again, she glanced back at her friend cheekily. “I might have thrown a ‘charming’ or ‘sexy’ in there somewhere, but I think you have me pretty much figured out.”
“If only.” Destiny responded. “At least we don’t have to worry about any men in our little family.”
With a wink in agreement, she raised her glass. “Cheers to that darling.”
