I forced myself to read all of them to stop my friends whinging about how "YOU'VE NOT READ THEMZ!!!!!1111!!1 YOU JUST DONT KLNOW ABOUT BELLA AND EDWARDS TWU WUV!!!!11!1!!!".
I have never been more bored by a book, more creeped out by a fictional love-interest's apparently romantic behaviour (because all us ladies love it when a guy sneaks into our room at night and also treats us like a 1930's housewife - quiet dear, men are talking!) and more disturbed by some of the concepts in a novel (pedophillia, stalking, 100-and-something-year-old virgins, teen pregnancy, depression/suicidal thoughts/night terrors over the loss of a BOYFRIEND...urgh.)...I think I died a little inside reading them.
I was OFFENDED by the series, frankly. It's a huge stab in the back of feminism, for a start, which considering it was written by a woman actually makes me weep for humanity a bit. Not to mention, people are hailing Bella as the ideal role model for young girls. Yeah, that's right 13-year-old girl who just got dumped by your boyfriend; you can't live without a man. Better take a break from being an ungrateful, nasty, bitchy little princess who looks down on people trying to be your friends and gives your loving father hell and throw yourself off a cliff, because that'll make it all better, trust me. Heaven forbid you not have a boyfriend. The world is over. /End sarcasm.
I also found it amusing how they kept reffering to Romeo and Juliet, trying to be all deep and romantic...Romeo and Juliet is not a romance, it's a tragedy! It warns about the dangers of fickle young love that's based mostly on passion and the whole 'love at first sight' thing. Romeo and Juliet aren't deeply in love or soulmates; they're two kids who are infatuated with each other, and that - combined of course, with the ignorance of their feuding families - is what, ultimately, causes their demise.
You'd think, considering Edward aparently has enough time on his cold glittery hands to memorize all of Romeo's lines, he'd have maybe caught onto what Shakespeare was actually trying to say through the play? That's like saying "Ophelia in Hamet drowning herself was TOATZ UNDERSTANDABLE, cuz it was all twu wuv that made her do it!" ...Um, no. No, no, no. But Bella throwing herself off a cliff over Edward to hallucinate his creepy face? THAT'S SO ROMANTIC. /End more sarcasm.
Anyway, uh...this wasn't supposed to be such a rant! But I just got into the swing of things...and now my tea is cold
