Description Project: 4 illustrations for a story, communicating a sense of mood.

Story: The highwayman.

They said no word to the landlord, they drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window;
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through the casement, the road that he would ride.

Acrylic ink. These were all done in a super rush so I feel they are not my very best work, but the teacher still seemed to like them.

Very nice! What was the workflow on this one? Sketching, acrylic ink, drying, india ink, drying? or some other way?

Yup, pretty much... it's been a few years since I did this, but I recall that I spent quite a lot of time drawing at first, then transferred the drawing to watercolor paper, acrylic ink washes, and lastly the acrylic ink outlines and splatter and whatnot.

You know, I never really got how they tied her up.

I mean, how can a musket be bound with the barrel benieth her breast if her hands were tied behind her and she could reach the barrel that way?

Love! Always been one of my favorite poems ...the tragic romance of it is just so beautiful...and your art totally does it justice. You can see the fear on her face, and she stands out, clear and distinct, while the soldiers are almost abstract menacing shadows...very effective.

Fantastic! I love Loreena McKennett's recording of this song (understanding it is a poem first). Bess's expression is great in this!
