Description This is a custom made Rowan wand for a patron. They requested a Celtic earth and sky theme and a pentacle. In Irish mythology trees were very sacred because they represented all four elements and because they were deeply connected with the earth by their root systems and they touched the sky with their branches. On this wand I have carved a Rowan tree with an owl sitting on top. In the tree is a butterfly, a stag, and a small pentacle. Below the tree are rings of Ogham blessings in old Irish, and carved triquetas & a triple spiral. This wand is tipped with a piece of raw naturally faceted garnet at the patron's request. It has been finished with only a light sanding and some linseed oil.

Nice detail work... it's always enjoyable to see someone else that is doing wonderful things with the life of wood. What kind of wood is this wand carved from? Also in regards to your woodburning... I was thinking of using a woodburner to sign my name on the bottoms of my wood sculptures, but know absolutely nothing of their use. Do you have any suggestions as to a decent or good quality woodburner and information on tips or tricks to signing signatures (via personal experiences or suggested readings)?

First of all, I love your creations! I spent quite a while drooling through your gallery! I'm hoping to one day get into cabinetry and structural carving. This Celtic styled wand is carved out of Rowan wood otherwise known as Mountain Ash. It's gorgeous for carving, very fine grained and sands beautifully.

You can buy a cheapy woodburner with interchangable tips at any hardware store for $8-20. If all you are using it for is a signature that may be all you need. It's hard to get the cheap ones to create smooth lines though. My Yule present was a pricy woodburner from Lee Valley, I think they start at $200, but other stores have the same style and quality of woodburner for less. My new woodburner can do anything, it is very delicate. There are special tips for writing - even woodburnign calligraphy tips!

Another suggestion is a stamp, you can get custom woodburning brands with your name or your businesses' name / logo that will burn the words into your sculptures. If that's all you use it for it's a wise investment and not as costly as a good woodburner. To see an example go to the woodburning section of the Lee Valley website: [link]

Lolair... thanks loads on the info...as a sculptor, I was considering making and casting a stamp with my signature but I think your link to Lee Valley looks even better (less time consuming on my part).

The mountain ash looks nice... I've never used it though I have a very large tree outside my dining room window of Mountain Ash, they call Ronn, her in Sweden.... I thought it looked like lilac wood at first, it was so light. I cut some lilac bushes (actually trees here) back a few years ago and got some wood that is about 8" in diameter from it. It is a very dense and verry white wood (almost looks like ivory), is a bit slow and hard to carve but sands and polishes incredibly well. Doesn't have a dark grain line in it. Nice to see your work and additional thanks for the woodburning tips!
