I havent seen Mirror Man, but looking into his bio in Toho Kingdom, hes got a huge verity of powers. Some of them sound cool.

Superficially, he's an Ultraman rip-off, of course. But he does have a very interesting backstory and powers of his own.

I dunno if I should say hes a rip-off, since he is made by the same company. But yeah.

"Rip-off" isn't exactly correct, especially since, as you pointed out, he's made by the same company that owns Ultraman. More like he was made to diversify Tsuburaya's superhero lineup, since Fireman, Jumborg Ace and 9, Aizenbo, and Gridman would follow after him.

Right.

I’ve watched the Gridman anime, and I gotta say, it was pretty fun to watch.

The live-action version's pretty good too. Can't find a decent subbed version, but there is the Eng version "Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad".

I haven't watched the live-action version yet, but hopefully in the future, I’ll give it a watch.

Decent series, but I didn't really like the intro, and I didn't like Mirrorman's design, particularly the head. I just think the head looks bulky and thought they could have slimmed it down. What I did like was the writing...till halfway through the series where it got more lighthearted.

Yes, Mirrorman looks like he's got a huge head
This show isn't as refined as some of the others in the genre, but it had some very original monsters.

But like I said, the strength lies in its writing

This is brilliant! You nailed those designs, but still gave them a wonderful "man in suit" quality!

I'd be interested in seeing you tackling other Japanese superheroes someday!

It's the man in a suit aspect that I find appealing

My plan is to have aΒ go at all theΒ japanese giant superheroes, and their monsters.

Did you ever see Spectreman? It is literally the cheapest giant japanese superhero show I have ever seen and it is dark, violent and downbeat throughout. I swear half the fights were shot in rock quarries to save money on miniatures.

I have heard of Mirrorman but never saw it, Im sure it is a lot of fun..I had a bootleg tape of Zone Fighter..I can never get of Japanese live action!

I have seen bits of Spectreman too, and I like that one too. They're all pretty much alike, but I'm guessing that Ultraman and Zone Fighter had the best budgets. Some of these shows are almost only shot in close quarters to the heroes and monsters. You can see that the studio space was quite humble. But I like the inventiveness of the monster designs. Just crazy, crazy stuff!

What is Mirrorman about?Β  Are giant monsters escaping from Wonderland?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loneanimator In reply to dalek-hal [2016-08-08 14:23:52 +0000 UTC]

The basic plot is that Earth is being invaded by a nameless alien race (just called "The Invaders") who send giant monsters and other threats to subdue our planet. The journalist foster son of a brilliant scientist is actually the offspring of the original Mirrorman, defeated in his war on the alien empire and presumed dead. The journalist hero adopts his dad's mantle and activates his dormant alien powers to become the Mirrorman protecting Earth. The series started out quite dark and serious. Then it progressed into silliness at the request of the TV network, to kake it more kid friendly, and more like Ultraman.

Β So that's Mirrorman. He looks sort of... unfinished. He's all grey! Definitely stands out from all those Ultramen. Does he have mirror gimmicks?Β  I did look at a clip from Youtube, but he was just punching and wrestling...
Β  Have you ever done Zone Fighter?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loneanimator In reply to dalek-hal [2016-08-09 21:30:48 +0000 UTC]

He's a less shiny superhero than Ultraman, that's for sure. He does have a number of special powers, among them the "Silver Cross", sort of similar to Ultraman's beam position energy weapon.Β

Haven't done Zone Fighter yet, but I will

Zone Fighter...His enemies lookΒ  Like "Mars Attacks" Martians, only with smaller brains and bug antennae. Guess it fits, since most of the reviews make the show sound dumb.Β  like these monster-fighting superheroes were meant to be watched by Philosophy majors... Zone Angel looks like a real cutie!

You can get the complete series in G-Fest. You can even put your own films the film festivals.
