I think a lot of filmmakers have been influenced by this movie. And the original story "Casting the Runes" seems to have been in the minds of the makers of "Drag Me To Hell."

Absolutely love this film (coincidentally this is one of my dad's favourites), saw it the first time a couple days ago, truly underrated.
There are so many good things about it (regardless of it's shortcomings)
I really think this picture captures the final moments of the film perfectly where the demon hunts down Karswell at the train station
such a memorable finale, and the demon looks amazing despite some of the dated effects.
Really excellent work.

I think the special effects in METROPOLIS are epic, and that was 1926.

Yes, Metropolis still looks amazing. I also love the 1924 Thief of Bagdad with Douglas Fairbanks. That one has got some amazing effects and sets too.

Love this movie! One of the scariest, ominous movies I've ever seen. Wonderful artwork!

Yup, old monster movies are great.^^ Nowadays they seem to consist of nothing but teenage sex followed by over-exaggerated amounts of gore (which I can't stomach) when said teens are killed off; The monsters don't even look good (though, you do still get the occasional so-bad-it's-good film, like Sharknado and Pirahanaconda)!Β

Such an underrated movie. And an underrated monster. It has to be one of the most famous monster faces there is in the 50's....and yet....if you showed a monster fan it's face and ask them what movie he is from....they will not know. It's like the poster of Raquel Welch for One Million Years B.C. Her figure and fur bikini is way more famous than the movie she was from lol!

I love because of its atmosphere. Even the appearences of the rubbery demon are very atmospheric. It's just all very well done.

And to be fair, the movie's take on the story allows for a successful presentation and some real suspense and uneasiness. I have seen some BBC presentations of "Casting the Runes" which try to be faithful to the text, and fall down because the demonic assassian is more felt than seen, and only directly confronted once, by touch!

I've seen one British TV adap of the tale, and I found it to be more cartoony and less faithful to the style and atmosphere of the James story, than this film.

I recommend that you watch the superior (and longer) British cut of the film. It explains things much better than the American edit, and it is much, much scarier.

The film presents a slow and gradual climb into terror, but it's well worth the wait. For me, the best part of the film is actually Karswell's creepy children's party.

That is a good scene, the part where the wind starts blowing and lightning strikes the tree he stands in front of, with a sinister smile, in addition to the clown makeup, on his face.

The atmosphere is really thick, and evil undercurrents are subtly spelled out during the scene. It's fantastic filmmaking.

Try telling that to anyone who thinks horror is nothing but jump scares and ghosts, stuff like this proves that even the most subtle things can be unnerving.

Love this movie, so well-made and genuinely creepy. Niall MacGinnis is simply AWESOME as Karswell, this likable and easy-going genial guy who's also pure evil at the core.

Loneanimator In reply to SXGodzilla [2014-11-24 21:27:35 +0000 UTC]
MacGinnis carries the whole film, and is the most interesting character, as opposed to Dana Andrews very wooden hero. The duel of wits on the train is a spectacle, and when Karswell realizes he's taken the cursed rune parchment his doom is absolutely spelled out in his face.

SXGodzilla In reply to Loneanimator [2014-11-25 02:17:39 +0000 UTC]
indeed.
Though I felt Dana Andrews did a pretty decent job conveying a 'Logical Man of Science' suddenly, slowly, realizing how wrong his viewpoint of the world is... and as he grows to realize this the more desperate he gets near the end.
