Description This was originally drawn as an illustration by ~neepa but I redesigned it to make it doable in stained glass. This piece is HUGE!

Took me a long time, but well worth the effort. About 276 pieces.

COMMISSIONS IN STAINED GLASS ARE AVAILABLE!! YOU could have something like THIS!

I doubt this was easy to make. I love this piece. I'm doing some research on stained glass for my fantasy series. I'm designing the religious aspect of it while working on my magic system. I have a question for you. How long does it take to make a piece of this size and caliber? Also how does one choose which colors they will use in their pieces or what size and shape they wish it to be? Are there standard sizes and shapes that people follow?

Gorgeous piece!
It was done using the Tiffany method, right?

Question: What did you use as a frame? It looks like iron, but it would have to bend around the window... Is it some specific type of bar? I ask because I just made a circle window (though not HALF as impressive as your own), and I am puzzled with how to strengthen the outside. Any insights you could offer into this matter would be very helpful

Lovely window. You did a great job on i.t

LoneDireWolfess In reply to Carlotta4th [2011-06-03 16:20:57 +0000 UTC]

Its a bent zinc frame. There's a device (can't remember the name of it though) and you take the long strips of zinc frame that you can buy and run it through it and it bends it into a circle. You can also get someone to make you a nice wood frame which is nice and sturdy, but also very expensive. As far as strengthening the piece itself, you just can't do it. Depending on how many pieces there are (the more cutting the weaker it will be), you'll just have to have faith in your frame!

Ah, zinc... that makes more sense than iron. Do you weld it to the window itself, or is it just holding it in a sort of rut? (Thanks for responding! This is very helpful).

LoneDireWolfess In reply to Carlotta4th [2011-06-08 16:49:06 +0000 UTC]

When you buy zinc for frames it has a large wedge on the inside edge. Keep in mind that in this method you have to have the frame bent BEFORE you make your piece, and then make the piece to fit the frame. If you want a small window, use a shorter strip of zinc, larger, use a longer one. If you already have your piece made, it will be hard for you to get a frame to fit just right, which usually involves extra bending and some unfortunate gaps that will look REALLY tacky when you have to fill them with solder. Then once you have the frame fixed around your window you just solder the two ends together! Hope that helps!

Very helpful indeed! A bit unfortunate for me since I've already made the window, but I suppose I'll find some sort of solution... Thank you!

beautiful! Was it difficult to take an illustration and format it for glass? I'm learning stained glass now and only have a few pieces done but would love to be at your level some day.

What are the exact dimensions of this piece?

Do you work at all with lead came, or do you just work with copper foil? I think that this would look fantastic as a leaded piece.

How long have you been dabbling in this craft?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LoneDireWolfess In reply to dead-now [2010-01-11 06:14:52 +0000 UTC]

It's been a long time since I have actually seen this piece hehe. I sold it a long time ago. I believe it was ABOUT 20" in diameter.

I usually only work with copper foil, its cheaper and easier, plus it was just how I was taught. I MIGHT consider doing something similar in lead, but it was a commissioned piece (the pattern was done by a fellow artist), so I don't really have the liberty to re-create this one.

I have been working in stained glass for 5 years.

Interesting. You've been working with glass about the same amount of time that I have. I have been doing it for six years and I always try and notice other admirers and artists. However, I work for an actual company and not from my own home or shop, so I suppose my situation is quite different. I also have no part in the designs and rarely have say in the color choices.

I enjoy working with lead when I am working with complex windows. What can be extra exciting is when I get to combine both copper foil and leading techniques for one piece. It doesn't happen often, but it's a challenge when it does.

Do you usually receive a good amount of commissions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LoneDireWolfess In reply to dead-now [2010-01-11 22:44:01 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I do the best I can working from home on my small college budget, and no, I don't usually get commissions because I have to charge so much for my work. (Most of my pieces are large, and are not cheap to make at all!). However, I find that the personal pieces that I make seem to sell on occasion (though I have a bad habit of selling myself really short )

No, there's a really cool store about an hour away from where I live. They are a small, family-owned business that has everything stained-glass related I could ever want (and then some )
