Description (2003-4) 3'x1.5' Stained glass, copper foil and lead solder with cut crystals, agate slivers, silver wire and nylon thread

I custom-made these four windows for the arches of my two study windows and our two dining-room windows at the front of our house. They depict the elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air respectively. Each window has some gaps in the glass panels, where I have hung cut glass crystals. The crystals catch the afternoon and evening sun and cast dozens of rainbows inside the rooms.

For the Earth panel I also used cut agate slivers among the glass to indicate the affinity to the element of Earth. Each window bears the alchemistical elemental triangle symbol appropriate to it in the bottom corner.

For the image I have manipulated four individual photographs to show all of the arches together in one picture.

Also, I hope I can come up with a good design for the elements contest, it's been taking me a long time to think up ideas for much of anything lately.

Really appreciate the feature! And I am so looking forward to what you'll be coming up with. Creativity takes time, that's why I kept the contest open for the entire summer.

These are so gorgeous! I wish my apartment had cool windows like these so I could make something to put in them. Such a great idea. I think fire and water are my favorites of the bunch. Great movement. Lovely!

Thanks so much! I really enjoyed the more abstract concept of just capturing the essence and movement of the element...

I absolutely ADORE all of your glass-art, it's gorgeous and I can't even imagine the amount of work and bandaged fingers you must put into each one of these!
-I have to ask though....how many windows does your house have!?? *laughs* I'm envious of the arches, they are so lovely! I would love to live in a house with so many stained windows in it!

And I really like the themes you've incorporated into your windows, fantastic symbolism!

Thank you so much for your nice comments! I do go through a few tubs of hand cream when I'm busy with one of those. LOL! Actually the part that's really taxing is grinding the glass, the silica powder and water between them just dry your hands out until the skin cracks...

As for the windows, I'm pretty much out of space now, just three more places to fill (which will get coats-of-arms). I guess once temperatures in the garage come down a little I may start on another project...

I've wanted to get into glass work from time to time...amongst so many other things, but it just seems very intimidating to me, so I really admire your skill and patience, as well as vision, with the art.

At some point in the future...probably still a little ways off, I would love to see about commissioning you for some stained glass if you're ever interested.
-Good luck with temperatures. I live in Mass. and it's been a little odd, cool one day and then very hot and muggy the next...but at least it's alot better than middle Tn. where I just moved from, they keep getting temp.s upwards of 100 degrees -eek!

Oh, I hope you give it a try, it is such a rewarding hobby I think. I wrote some short instructions on how I do my pieces and put them in my scraps. Here's the link in case you're curious. [link]

And I would be honored to do a glass commission for you at some point. Please note me when you're ready and can tell me what you'd like. I'll typically first make a cartoon that will look as close as possible to the finished piece and send you a file with it, and when you're happy with it, I'll start on the glass.

Hi

I'm really surprised to see here this kind of art - positively!
A damned good feeling for the elements; are you an astrologer?

Anyway, you did an awesome work - go on

Ellygator In reply to LightDrop [2004-11-30 16:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've dabbled in astrology, and I'm really fascinated by the old concept of the four elements. I think they are incredible archetypes and vibrate on so many levels, like the four temperaments, four seasons, four cardinal directions, the tarot, etc. It's quite a big influence on my art.

Thanks for noticing

gah. eep. sorry, don't know what to say. besides the typical 'amazing' and 'i'm really really jealous.' you have such a wonderful feeling movement in these-especially in fire and water. it's hard to believe it's solid. and you added rainbow catchers. it's hard to dislike anything that involves lots of little rainbows

Thank you That's cool! Fire and water are my faves, too. I designed them first. Air was the dodgiest and I ended up changing the design twice.
