Description An owl at the Oregon Zoo poses perfectly for me just prior to his feeding time.

If you don't like this kind of photo,
DO NOT PROCEED TO "A Way With the Chicks 002!

Just a little warning...it's not too bad, but it is fairly graphic!

Aww, I miss visiting owls at the zoo. And taking pictures of them. They have some of the most beautiful eyes.

There you are! I thought you had gone and died on me! Yes they do. But why do you miss them? don't they still have some? I saw a pic on the website today of the "eagle owl"...did I get that right? I'd love to see him but he's probably not on display anywhere?

Still waiting to see those wolf shots you got too.

Nu I'm alive. Kinda. Just been running around and not getting sleep
The only owls we have on exhibit are teh, northern spotted owls in the cascade exhibit. And they are SOO difficult to get pictures of. But you can get pretty close to them.
o.o Where'd you see the Eagle owl? I've seen pictures of her when Michael showed them to us during the photo meeting. They're AMAZING pictures.

Nu, He'll be a show bird and be out during the summer shows hopefully. They're hoping to do some training flights beforehand.

I know. School just started Ima see if I can get at least one in.

Not sure which page, but I was searching the zoo website for the animal identification page and I came across the pic of the Eagle Owl. He's awesome looking. Too bad we won't be able to view him and get some good photos. Darn. Guess I'll just have to concentrate on the wolves! Going again this weekend...the weather will be nice, I just know it and I'm going to spend most of the day there trying to get some REALLY good shots of them.

I think, instead of trying to visit all the animals every time I go...I'm just going to pick out a couple each time and spend most of the day with them looking and waiting for the really special shots!

Yeah that's what I usually do.
I got some more shots of Chinook in the tree, and Columbia being cute.
That was I think the 13th.
I'm gonna try and make it this weekend. I have a friend stopping by this weekend no idea if we're gonna do stuff or whatever.

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to DeeOtter [2009-02-20 00:39:56 +0000 UTC]

LOL....doesn't it cost more to keep getting computers to have many copies of free trials on than it would to buy the software?

DeeOtter In reply to LoneWolfPhotography [2009-02-20 03:07:50 +0000 UTC]

Probably. But two computers aren't worth anything. Laptop was the expensive thing. The old laptop was more than this one but that was before I got into photography...

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to 1001G [2009-02-19 06:34:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm just an ordinary person Edie, why would it floor you that I talk to you? I'm no better than you are. We are all learning. Problem is, some "artists" tend to forget they were inexperienced too at one time and get an "I'm too good to mess with you" attitude. I will never do that. ANYONE that wants to be a photographer and needs or wants help I'm here for. I wish they were all like that.

oh I was just being smart about your lovely comment on my work ( like you cant be talking about my work) My work i feel is ok but no means great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to 1001G [2009-02-19 21:15:19 +0000 UTC]

That is probably the attitude that will keep you humble and never get like the ones I mentioned previously. That's a good thing. I have the same attitude. I think my work is ok and I even think I have some really great ones, but I've still a long way to go.

Just between you and me and the fencepost...I think your work is awesome!

1001G In reply to LoneWolfPhotography [2009-02-21 06:15:22 +0000 UTC]

I really appreciate your comment about my work but the more i see on here the less i think of mine. Maybe I need a better editing program?..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to 1001G [2009-02-21 07:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know what you mean. I see some art on here from people 1/4 my age and it's better and I wonder if I should just give up. But I won't, cause some of my work is just as good. And, I know I'm shooting with an inferior lens. When I get my good lens, my work will be just as good as most here. Don't give up, you'll get there!

A better editing program will always help, more features and more control...but that would depend on what you're currently using.

oh i love taking pictures to much to stop. Im here for the fun and learn of course. I have photo shop elements 5 and microsoft image suite. Im trying to learn layering and its just not sinking in..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to 1001G [2009-02-22 06:53:13 +0000 UTC]

I'll never give up either of course....in just about two weeks I have gotten over 1,200 page views so I must be doing ok for somebody! I'll keep trying and getting better and looking for better lenses.

If you have photo shop elements 5, then you have pretty good editing software.

Do you know there are online tutorials for most everything you can do in photo shop? You should do a search for them...I bet you can find a good one for layers.

I know how to create them and how to use them in my own little way, but I know there is a lot more you can do with them than I know how to do, but I could help you if you need some.

Hey, I looked at that pic you sent me about the grain. Tell you the truth, I couldn't really see any...it looked pretty good to me and a fine capture. Maybe it's just because it's processed during upload or something...but I couldn't really make out any bad grain so still not sure what to tell you.

Has using your tripod made any difference in what you're seeing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1001G In reply to LoneWolfPhotography [2009-02-23 05:53:03 +0000 UTC]

I really need to take the time to read..at the moment we are redoing a bathroom so that keeps me away from the computer. The pic i sent was really not a good example......Ill try to get out again some time and take a shot of the mountains zoomed in (thats when i see the grain, big time) and I need to take one with the tripod. That will be next on my list so i can so a process of elimination

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to 1001G [2009-02-23 08:01:55 +0000 UTC]

Very good idea. Take the same shot in various ways and remember how you did each one so you can see what changes make it worse or better.

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to PattyMcK [2009-02-19 06:18:13 +0000 UTC]

I've seen a few here and there. Only two in the wild. I was shooting near the columbia river once in late afternoon. Saw a nice spot to take a shot of some Japanese cranes....can't think what they're full name is at the moment. Was just getting back into my friends car and happened to look up in the branches of the tree next to the road and nearly lost it...there was a Great Horned Owl sitting in the branch watching me not 12 feet away. As I was shooting the cranes, he was nearly right over my head and I didn't see him. I was trying to tell my friend to stop the car and I couldn't spit it out! It was too funny. I finally just screamed "OWL" and got out while the car was still moving, strolled back to the spot and shot him for about 10 minutes from every angle til he flew away. That was really cool!

Who? Sorry, just a little joke. You're right, they do. They're eyes are filled with so much expression...or so it seems. I'm sort of crazy about them too. Unfortunately, I've only seen two in the wild. No camera with one and lots of pics of the other, a great horned owl!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

msdawe In reply to LoneWolfPhotography [2009-02-19 14:42:01 +0000 UTC]

The only great horned owl I've ever seen was at a zoo, so much for wild. Owl's just seem really stern and feminine to me, and the great horned owl looks almost human, the black looking like eye lashes.

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to msdawe [2009-02-19 21:20:17 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you. I'll be posting more of them today, and some shots of my Appaloosa by request.
