so over on my tumblr i got this ask:

If Fey had a proper diet while she was pregnant, and had properly fed Bruce while he was an infant, would he still be as small as he is today?

hmmm, interesting. To recap, Canon!Bruce is tiny because 1.) Fey's depression led to her drinking heavily during her pregnancy, so Bruce was born very undersized, a runt, and 2.) his growth was further stunted due to poor nutrition (His mother was trying her best, but she was a depressed alcoholic, so sometimes she just…forgot to feed Bruce. He learned to steal food from his schoolmates’ lunchboxes.) Here's runty little Brucie compared to his deceased brother, Butch:

And thus, in our canon story, Bruce remains a prickly diminutive pint-sized fuck, even as an adult.

But in the alternate timeline where Butch doesn't die (we'll call this the Butchverse), Fey and Cutthroat's marriage wouldn't have been as horribly depressing, Fey would not have turned to drinking to cope with Butch drowning on her watch, and thus Bruce wouldn't have been born a runt. He would have been fed decently as well, and therefore would grow up into the giant ass draft horse salty seadog he was always meant to be. In this universe, Bruce is even bigger than Cutthroat. Him big. Poor Stormy is trying very hard not to swoon.

I imagine Butchverse!Bruce is actually a bit more well-adjusted than Canon!Bruce. Without Butch's death looming over the family, Captain Cutthroat does not become emotionally abusive toward Bruce (he's still pretty gruff and stern, and kinda obviously favors his older, tougher son, but he doesn't show open contempt for Bruce like he does in the canon story). Bruce is quite close with his older brother Butch and mum Fey, and Fey tries her best to instill kindness and compassion in her youngest son. That kinda conflicts with the family fishing business, which can be....messy. (old art, there's a mini-story attached to the drawing if you click it). Bruce isn't happy with this way of life, but doesn't know any other way.

I also imagine this Bruce a little "softer" then how he is in canon. His home life is far from perfect but he doesn't have outright abuse and neglect turning him cruel either. Its more of a drive from his one-sided sibling rivalry to prove that he's just as good as Butch. Better, even. He's not just Cutthroat's "runt son" or Butch's baby bro living in the other's shadow and I can see him pushing himself to be tougher and braver and stand out as his own stallion, secretly suffering through an extreme inferiority complex. He doesn't even realize that he just wants his dad and brother to be proud of him...and he's wasting his life in misery trying to be someone he's not.

And then he'll meet Stormy, and Bruce will become exposed to a different side of life. True, Stormy's views on things can be a little too idealistic and black and white (I don't agree with dolphin culling in the slightest, but I know the people doing it are just everyday guys trying to put food on the table), but damn it...Bruce wants to be part of that world. I see the Butchverse as a family drama with some forbidden romance thrown in. Like Bruce really struggles in this one between being loyal to his family and their way of life, or accepting his true self and living his life the way HE wants. And getting hit with the massive "oh shit I'm gay for this sweet, goofy bird-horse" truck really doesn't help matters
