Description

a lot of ya'll wanted to see something like this, little comparison between Zecora and Radhi

I find Zecora both boring and problematic, and choose not to include her in my pandoraverse story for personal reasons. Still, I don't mind giving a bit of headcanon about her.

-Zecora is a mountain zebra (a smaller species, identified by a lack of stripes on their underbelly). Formerly a medicine mare in her homeland, Zecora is the lone survivor of a relentless dry season that slowly destroyed her herd. The foals and the elderly were the first to succumb to the heat, and then came mysterious illness, striking down herd members so quickly and mercilessly that Zecora, despite her tireless efforts, couldn't discover a cure in time. Her grief and feelings of failure were unbearable. From each home, she took a totem to remind her of the lives that slipped through her hooves, then fled as far away as she could, to start anew, somewhere she could be alone in her mourning, somewhere she could study the magic of alchemy and potion brewing....perhaps her findings could help somepony someday. At the very least, she gets by okay, selling cures for everyday ailments to ponyfolk, dabbling in ancient dark arts, holding sΓ©ances to communicate with spirits

Zecora is quite content to live alone, and kinda wishes she'd stop being disturbed by panicky mares begging her to brew some easy solution to their asinine friendship problem of the week.....

-Radhi is a plains zebra, which are bigger than their mountainous counterparts. Although Zebrican society and technology is as developed as Equestria's, there is a heavier emphasis on tradition, especially among the older folk. Zebras are spread across many countries (Zegypt being one of the most notable and ancient). Some live in populous cities within their nation, some live abroad, and some live in traditional nomadic herds. Radhi comes from a small herd located in the heart of the Marengeti, lead by her grandparents and populated by family and close friends. Her herd has protected the surrounding wildlife for centuries, establishing nature reserves and creating programs to monitor and encourage population growth of endangered species. Radhi is committed to her family's cause, and detests poachers.

fun facts

-Growing up, Radhi was enamored with Daring Do books and dreamed of becoming an adventurer someday. Though she loves her herd, she's always longed to travel the world.

-Radhi is skilled at languages and picks them up quickly. She can speak four of them fluently.

-As a zebra, Radhi is strong af, and could cave a lion's skull in with one kick. Zebras are slower runners than ponies, but make up for it in stamina. They can survive up to five days without water.

-Radhi and Buck returned to her Marengeti herd to be married. Buck was surprised when, before the wedding, the herd members painted him with ceremonial zebra stripes (made with white river clay) to officially welcome him into their family.....He was told this was a great honor, but he's still not sure if the zebras were fucking with him or not. Radhi was snickering when she assured him they weren't....whatever, Buck thought he looked pretty dashing (and Radhi did too).

-Radhi is good friends with Fey, and of course loves her nephew Bruce, but she honestly cannot stand Buck's brother Cutthroat. Cutthroat's crass remarks about his brother dating a zebra always left a bad taste in Radhi's mouth, but she held her tongue around him as a favor to Buck. She doesn't feel bad about cursing him out in her native tongue tho (not like the mean old oaf can understand a word). Buck tries his best to keep the peace, trying to be patient with his stubborn big brother, but he can and does draw the line at Cutthroat being rude to Radhi's face. Do not disrespect Buck's wife, or any zebra, in front of Buck- Cutthroat learned that the hard way.

-When a zebra and a pony make a hybrid offspring, it's called a zony. Radhi's parents are not subtle in their hints about Buck and Radhi making them a cute lil zony grandbab before they die of old age and grandbab-less heartbreak

I know it'sΒ  Loppy's take on Z buuut no offense meant truly none just never see her as the cranky loner mare maybe because of the show sure... but she just never seems to just want to be left alone. LOVE the idea of why she's all alone and would explain the whole able to teach Twilight magic in the Alicorn amulet's episode if she dabbles in the dark stuff. But none the less even so she does seem to genuinely care about the girls and especially AB. Just my two cents honestly about the whole ordeal.Β

My personal feelings toward a fictional character are my own. They do not impact your enjoyment of the character.

Siansaar In reply to Lopoddity [2018-07-10 18:10:27 +0000 UTC]

True. It's mostly because when I read "problematic", I'm used to people meaning "not pc enough" and "not pc enough" translating to "make it as safe and generic as possible", which rubs me the wrong way. I realize this isn't what you mean and mostly my own assumptions, but it was still good to read your explanation in another comment. I wish they'd show other zebras on the show.

You know, I really thought about it, and I realized I don't really dislike Zecora. I just really, really hate her introductory episode, Bridle Gossip. The writing is so bad. The mane six are made into idiots simply so they can learn an anti-racism message. They're so out of character for the episode, I hadn't realized before. Pinkie is annoying, Applejack is ridiculously xenophobic, Rarity, who is usually very generous and accepting, says some very problematic things, β€œJust look at those stripes. So garish!”. Even Twilight, the smart one, succumbs to the idiot ball by the end of the episode, and breaks into Zecora's home and attacks her. All of Ponyville hides from Zecora...why? Because she wears a cloak and has stripes? They're more intolerant to her than they are to actual villains. And keep in mind, only Twilight knows what a zebra actually is, so the rest aren't judging off pre-existing stereotypes or experiences with zebras, they judge Zecora for entirely superficial reasons.

But this is owed to season one's weak writing. Lots of other season one episodes reduce the mane six into idiots just to learn a lesson. The conflict in the episode feels forced, because I don't believe the Mane Six would be racists. It feels incredibly out of place in cutesy utopian Equestria. It'd be far more likely that Twilight and company would bound up to Zecora and hound her with questions/welcome songs/a party/new outfits than they would run and hide at the sight of her. If they'd done this, and Zecora had spurned or ignored them, then the race conflict would at least feel more organic, but they don't, and their behavior comes across as childish and unfounded. Real racism is typically more subtle than "Run and hide! There's a different-looking person outside!!". Real racists are often fully capable of interacting, even being polite and friendly, to the people they hate.....then quietly going to vote for legislation that bars those people access to equal education, housing, healthcare, etc. Real MLP racists would go "I'm not racist, I have a zebra friend!"

Racism is complicated, and I can't honestly expect the writers of MLP to grasp every nuance of it. But I do expect them- if they're not willing to put in the effort to understand- to not write an episode about racism in the first place. lMLP (especially in season one) should not have tackled an episode about racism. The show was simply too cutesy and simplistic to handle a complicated subject, and in the end, you end up with the Native American/European colonialist violent conflict being reduced to buffalo and cowponies flinging pies at each other, and the Mane Six looking painfully, unreasonably bigoted as they judge Zecora solely on her appearance, and behave like 90s sitcom racists in a ham-histed very special episode. It's insulting to reduce subjects like this into a 22 minute easily digestible conflict with a patronizing "let's all get along" moral at the end. Even ignoring the problems with Zecora's chracter, Bridle Gossip is insulting. And it's not because MLP is a kid's cartoon- Dr. Seuss' The Sneetches, and Disney's Zootopia, do far better jobs at depicting the mechanics of bigotry, and why it should be overcome. Bridle Gossip is just bad writing all around.

Mmm, I can see where you're coming from, although I don't feel as strongly about it because I think the writers were still trying to find "their voice" for the characters in S1, testing out what works and what doesn't. You have a lot of episodes that are very simplified to match a younger audience than what it seems to be now. The characters behaved a lot more childish than they do now.

I wonder how an interraction between these two would go? Would they each know the tribes they were from and respect or scorn one another? Would Radhi scorn Zecora for leaving her homeland to live in Equestria, despite being married to Buck? Or would Zecora welcome Radhi to her hut in the Everfree with open hooves if the family needed somewhere to stay while Buck was on business?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lopoddity In reply to CrimsonFangX666 [2018-07-10 17:14:37 +0000 UTC]

Zecora is like twenty or thirty years older than Radhi, and Radhi would never disrespect an elder by scorning her life choices. Also, zebras can and do migrate and live outside of Zebrica. They'd probably get along well, both appreciating having someone that speaks the same language (Radhi's native language (something like Maa) is different than Zecora's (something like Swahili), but Radhi's picked up many languages as she's traveled). They'd certainly enjoy talking and cooking together.

I hope you don't mind me asking Lop but why do you dislike Zecora so much? The story you made up for her sounds very solid and could make for some sad and intense moments with specific characters.

Just curious because I do like Zecora a lot, it genuinely makes me happy every time she has a role in an episode.

Not the artist, but part of me wants to say it has something to do with stereotypes. At least, that was personally my immediate thought when Zecora was introduced in the series. I personally still like her, but oof.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MatrixFairy In reply to RennyRensaur [2018-07-10 14:25:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i get that she could be seen as offensive/racist in a way.

tho personally i've been interpreting her as an "african american" baju witch, more than an african shaman/medicine man/whatever it might be called. i don't know if that makes it more offensive or not...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RennyRensaur In reply to MatrixFairy [2018-07-12 04:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, she basically is supposed to be that-- and while the concept of an African shaman/medicine person is not offensive in and of itself-- the fact is that everything we say, do and create doesn't live in a vacuum. In which, Zecora's concept comes from a very overused stereotype and she's like.. the only one of her kind, too.Β Long story short, she suffers from this:Β tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php… It's not an entirely bad thing.. but it's not exactly great either (esp given the context of our society.)

I think her character existing would be better taken if there was more of her kind (and doing other things), but so far even after 8 seasons, we haven't seen anything more. Apparently there are more zebras in the comics, but they are only there for like a chapter with no interaction.
