more headcanon stuff, on the nature of "fluffy" ponies

There are many sub-categories of Equestrian pony. Gargantuan (for pony standards), powerful Clydesdales and draft ponies, lean, speedy Thoroughbreds, splotchy Appaloosas and Paint ponies, etc....and one very prominent breed is the short, very fluffy Shetland pony. Shetland ponies are small yet sturdy, and most notably, they are the strongest for their size of all ponies. In Equestria, they are commonly referred to as "Fluffies", because of the incredibly thick double-coat they grow in the wintertime, a leftover from their origin as mountain dwellers. Some Fluffies retain their long coat in the summertime as well, though this is unusual.

Fluffle Puff, a pink fictional Fluffy, is a famous children's media mascot in Equestria. She is beloved by foals everywhere, with toy and book sales that rival that of the popular Royal Princess dolly playsets. Fluffle Puff is noted for being a mute character, instead communicating via comedic raspberry noises. Baby Stormy is quite enamored with the character and can't take his nap without his Puff plushie.

DumbBell ("Bell", although his real name is Atlas, which he actually finds more embarrassing) is, like many ponies in modern Equestria, an equine of mixed background. Overall, he's got the build of a Clydesdale, but with some excess shagginess that hints at distant Fluffy ancestry. Bell is big and powerful, and once dreamed of being an Olympic-class weightlifter....a dream that abruptly got put on hold when Bell's dad walked out on the family when Bell was a teenager, leaving Bell to quickly snag a job at the weather factory to support his mom and numerous siblings. As an adult, Bell genuinely enjoys his job managing weather and has come to be quite knowledgeable about meteorology....although he hasn't quite given up on his passion for weightlifting, and often competes in local contest with unexpected good friend, Bulk Biceps. Baby Stormy thinks his daddo is the strongest pony in the world, and quite enjoys clambering on him to chew on daddy's ears.

Bell has a hidden heart-shaped splotch of pale fur hidden beneath his bangs. Rainbow Dash is very fond of exposing it to annoy him (and giving it obnoxious kisses). When Bell is in a worrying, mother hen mood over his reckless wife, or his tiny babbus, Dash will call him "Bella" and refer to him as her wife. He'll usually snark back that at least she knows what it's like to have a wife.....sometimes he forgets that she's even a mare. Snark snark jerk kisses

Aerostorm ("Stormy") is the teeny son of Bell and Rainbow Dash. Shown here modeling a sweater his grammie Windy made him. Where the Fluffy gene is only somewhat evident in Bell, it has hit baby Stormy like a goddamn truck. Stormy is "cursed" with growing a thick soft double-coat in the winter. He was also born in the winter, so Rainbow Dash was quite surprised to find she'd apparently given birth to a miniature wooly mammoth. Stormy was also born with a full head of hair (rare for pony newborns). It, like his coat, grows out very quickly, leaving him a tiny fluff-bomb hot mess of a foal, aided by his fear of haircuts. As an adult, Stormy always sheds his winter coat all at once, entirely unexpectedly, and sometimes a pony walking below will be suddenly "crushed" by a soft fluff-pile as Stormy flies overhead. The first time this happens is when Dumbbell is giving his infant son a bath.

Bell: You excited for spring, Champ?

Stormy: *giggles and splashes in the water*

Bell: *grins and picks him out of the tub and starts drying him off.* Well, Daddy is excited too! I get to show you all the fun stuff! Playing hoofball, blowing bubbles, catching fireflies, campfires-hey, think you can learn to run in the next day here, fluff butt?

Stormy: *squeals as Bell tickles his belly*

Bell: *laughs* That's the spirit! Okay, so lets add six-legged racing to the list- *pulls the towel off him and freezes in utter shock*
*all over the towel and around Stormy are HEAPS of hair. His long furred little colt now only has a fine coat underneath*

Bell: *wide eyed look of horror*

Stormy: *whimpers at the change in Bell and starts to fuss*

Bell: O-oh...look at that...your-your fur fell out, buddy. *lifts up a lock of fur and starts to hyperventilate* All...all of your fur........RAINBOW!!
