A shadow, a ghost, one opera does chime.
A musical, a decade so long it has played,
A song, whose memories have softly laid.
A man, singular spectator down in his seat,
A heart, two which the rhythm does beat.
A rose, soft petals, forget all you know,
A mask, to hide that which in stow.
A question, now asked plainly for all to seen,
A riddle, was it twenty-three, four or eighteen?

It’s four. The answer, “it”, is the poem, but only the last four lines matter because you “forget what you know” before those lines.

I think it is to but why do you say four? He's been doing this longer that four years. I believe it's to do with his age and I forgot how old he is but he started this ten years ago.

It seems like he is referring to The Phantom of the Opera. The story takes place a few years after the opening of the Garnier Opera House; I assume that the numbers referred to the number of years the Phantom was active by the time placement of the book, and four was the closest number to that.
