2:Β That is a REALLY clever shield design!Β it protects the soldier yet still allows him to use that spear... why haven't I seen this style more often?

seems to be popular in the bronze age and antiquity, but it might not be worth having a bite taken out of your shield.

There are depictions of what could be interpreted as a scale vest on the vase that drapes over the front and back, but not the sides. Of course, that's all up to interpretation.
