interesting that there's no route along the Nile itself: it's clearly set up solely for the convenience of someone from the Italian metropole coming in through Tunis (perhaps through a fancy Maltese tunnel!)

yes, because the primary scope was to connect more quickly Italy and eastern Africa the government decided to cross the desert which has less obstacles and allows a more direct route
