Description

After fighting with myself for a long time I finally settled on bringing Forb back because he was a fun character I didn't get to do much with instead of Axo, whose story will live on outside of any group.

Name: Forb

Nickname (s): Pepper (His black markings, his red coloring, his attitude - there's lots of reasons)

Gender: Male

    Preferred Pronouns: He/Him

Team: N/A (for now)
Rank: Recruit
Tribe: SKYWING / Sand/NightWing
Powers: Can breathe fire; large wings and greater stamina; was born on a night with one full moon and got "mindreading," but the NightWing gene is so diluted that he only has a heightened sense of empathy. May be able to hear thoughts if they are thought loudly in his direction. Radiates warmth like a SandWing.

Physical Description: Mostly has the physique of a SkyWing, though has unusual scale shape patterns that show a mix of his heritage. Black scales are randomly scattered through his smaller scale patterns, along with dapples on the bridge of his nose. Very lean, muscular, and tall; surprisingly fit for a tribrid. In places where his scale plating is made up of tiny scales instead of the larger ones, his scales are softer than normal, though still tough to penetrate.

 Level-headed
It is hard to throw Forb off his game or surprise him. He may not always know what's coming, but he'll always do his best to take it in stride. He nearly never freaks out or blows up at anyone - if he does, you know you've done something very wrong.

 Logical
Forb finds it easy to connect the dots when everything is set out in front of him, and it always seems easy to him to find the next step or place to look in a pattern. Part of the reason he doesn't enjoy Pyrrhian Language Class is because it sometimes doesn't make sense, nor does history; but put him in a math class, and he's ready to roll.

 Charismatic
Between icy spells, when he deigns someone worth his time, Forb can be very charming and persuasive. He doesn't like making enemies, so he tends to try to either stay away from others or make them his friend.

 Caring
Despite not usually looking or acting the part, Forb is an individual who cares very deeply for his friends, though he has a hard time making them. Those he does have he would be there for till the end if they asked, even if he doesn't always act like a ray of sunshine around them. He may not show how he feels, but he watches out for those he cares for closely. (He also can't help but be caring for those he doesn't know, sometimes; his empathy from his NightWing side is hard to control and turn off, so he feels what others are feeling easily, and in turn cares more for them.)

 Flirtatious
Flattery will get you everywhere, as Forb always says. Well, perhaps not, but it's what he thinks. He doesn't usually form genuine romantic attraction to dragons, but he flatters them with flirting, and always looks for the signs to stop. He does think it's cute when others get flustered by it, but he also thinks that the way dragons react to his flirting tells a lot about them.

 Observant
Forb likes to peoplewatch others, taking in parts of their appearance and the way they talk and act and storing it in his little databank of people in his mind. He can't remember everything, of course, but what he can remember is sure to be useful, so he tries to get it all crammed in his head.

 Stays Out of Trouble
While Forb goes out of his way to stay out of trouble, that doesn't mean that he doesn't cause it occasionally. Since he prefers not to have attention on himself, he never makes himself an overt source of trouble, always making sure to stay in the authority figures' good graces and making suggestions to others that might lead to them doing what he wants them to do. In any case, he's crafty enough to not get in trouble, and because he cares about staying in good standings with the law, he does generally try to stick to being a neutral party at the least.

 Quiet
Despite his big personality and stature, Forb doesn't like to show it off or take up a bunch of room; he tries his best to remain unseen so he can peoplewatch in peace, and stays quiet so no one will notice him listening in. He does a pretty good job at it, avoiding talking until he really needs to.

 Petty
If you have done something to Forb or one of his friends, he will absolutely remember what you did, where and when you did it, and who you did it to, and he will then proceed to hold it against you forever. He may not show it outright, but he is very practiced in the language of passive-aggression.

 Frigid
Despite having inherited a SandWing's warm scales, his heart doesn't seem to be so open. He delivers chilling words to those he has grudges against, and can ice out strangers so they don't even have a chance to see his softer side. In a word, he's cold.

 A Gossip
To say Forb is nosy is an understatement. He'll take the information he gets from observing others and turn it into something nasty, or overhear something and murmur it to someone else in a passing conversation with the purpose of letting others know things they shouldn't. He doesn't tend to do this too often, knowing he has a reputation to maintain, but he's always looking out for juicy tidbits anyway; he doesn't have to actively spread rumors to know them all.

 Judgemental
Forb will spend time observing something from the outside and take it for face value, especially dragons. He believes they can't ever truly hide what they are, so the greatest mask they wear is one they frabricate from their self, which allows everyone to see what they are if they know where to look anyway.

 Untrusting
Because of his early childhood, Forb has a hard time trusting others, which is why he often acts the way he does towards them. He just can't bring himself to fully believe others will keep his secrets secret, or that they can handle things better than he himself could.

Likes: sweets/sweet fruits, soft furs, shiny things, cuddling with people he loves, hunting
Dislikes: being told what to do, being touched without permission, shared living space, crowding, thunderstorms, the dark
Strengths: sweet-talking, strategy, tracking
Weaknesses: nightwings, cooperation, too prideful
Quirks / Habits: curls/uncurls his tail over his back, polishes his talons/scales regularly, persistently makes eye contact with people he talks to, reads others' emotions and reacts appropriately

Hatchling: Forb was hatched in a broken household, with three older siblings and a younger one on the way. His mother didn't care enough, and his father cared too much. From a young age Forb began to understand this, even if he didn't know he understood it. His mother was as controlling over his father as he would let her be, but he was slowly getting sick of it and showing it more and more.

His mother, Eclipse, was always going on about what a burden it was to have so many children, and his older siblings actively tried to keep him away from her some nights when she would come home with hazy eyes and an unsteady gait. What few times he'd tried to bond with her ended in disaster; his first trophy of a successful hunt was called pitiful and discarded, the painting he'd done for her for her hatching day was dubbed "an atrocious monsterpiece," and when he tried to learn how to dance from his older sister, he was called a "great lumbering baffoon," among other things.

Eclipse only ever really showed pride for Hickory, who left home when he was about five years old to attend a nearby guild school. The rest she treated similarly to Forb, even his oldest sister, who had much stronger powers than Forb - both future sight and mindreading. Hickory often seemed oblivious to her doting, but he meant well when it came to his siblings, even if he was warped to think they had a weak father.

Nutmeg, his oldest sister, was more of a protective figure than Hickory, grown up too fast and acting more as a mother than Eclipse ever did. Forb would hide away with her in her room whenever their mother started to scream and shout at anyone in the house. He hated to hear the conflict she started, mostly with their father, Flint. Nutmeg seemed to understand the most that it was stressful to be around high tension with his emotion-reading, since she was the only of their siblings who had also gotten any type of mind-reading from their NightWing heritage. She helped him learn to control it, to shut people out when he didn't want to hear them, so he didn't have to sift through a crowd of emotions in his mind. He grew incredibly attached to Nutmeg, even moreso than he was to his father, but he still couldn't help but want to have his mother's pride and affection.

It seemed that his youngest sibling, Mallow, hatching was the final straw for her, and after a last fight one evening with his father, she was gone the next day. Forb was only a little older than one year old at the time. No one was surprised, but for a while, no one was sure what to do either. Nutmeg was the first to accept that she was gone, and took up the responsibility of getting them into a financially stable environment.

Dragonet: His father had tried to save the relationship, and they all knew that, but the split was a long time coming. When she left, they had to move in with Forb's uncle Sparky. He accepted them graciously into his home, and he, Forb's father Flint, and Forb's oldest sibling Nutmeg worked to support the three growing dragonets, along with Hickory's education.

Forb did all he could to help his family at the age he was, knowing he wasn't old enough to take a job but doing what he could at home. He didn't seem to like talking to anyone outside of their household, and was perhaps the least social of the children, probably due to his emotion-reading still being unpredictable.  Flint began to worry for him after a time, and asked Hickory to keep an eye on Forb whenever he was at home. Hickory, who had mellowed out since Eclipse abandoned them, accepted, though it was a tense conversation - he still believed Flint should be able to support their family on his own.

Hickory was home more often since moving in with Sparky had put them closer to his school, and he moved back in to help take care of everyone when he wasn't at class. Since Nutmeg, Flint, and Sparky often worked long hours to help support everyone, Holly shut herself away from the family and studied constantly, and Mallow was newly-hatched, Hickory often ended up being the only one that Forb had to talk to. But as time began to pass and Forb was forced to begin attending basic education at two years old, he found that he could not rely on Hickory, or Nutmeg, or anyone as he used to.

Forb was still closed off from the rest of the world, but he began to shut out his family, too. He understood, suddenly, why Holly wanted to shut herself away from everyone as often as she could under the pretense of schoolwork. It was easier just to not let anyone in and think you were just busy. Hickory seemed to accept it fairly easily, since he wasn't really the nurturing type, and he began to focus more on helping raise Mallow, leaving Forb to his own devices.

Sure enough, while Hickory was at school and preparing to work for the guild, Forb began to become entangled in the wrong sort of crowd around the time that he turned five. They seemed to think he was funny, a hybrid child in the streets of a SkyWing city trying to prove that he was fit enough to be one of them. Unfortunately for him, no matter how SkyWing he was, all he was was a mockery to most of them.

They put up with him because of his bond with their leader, a SkyWing nearly seven years older than he was named Sear. Forb found himself enchanted with the older dragon, and was taken under his wing, protected in their little crowd. With his help, Forb learned not to let others walk all over him; he grew a sharper tongue and a quicker wit, and learned to keep his claws clean when he was walking home. Sear was the first dragon Forb felt he could be himself with in a while.

Forb became the right hand of their leader despite his young age, and became the envy of many. He was still the victim of a mean joke or two, until they learned that picking on Forb would result in a 'lesson' from Sear. He became known through the town for being just as big a troublemaker as Sear, but some of the more sympathetic adults couldn't help but feel sorry for them. Almost everyone knew what was happening between him and Sear, but no one with means to do something about it had enough evidence to support their claims. Forb himself didn't appear unhappy, despite being attached at the hip to Sear.

After a few too many late nights, a few too many bruises and cuts when he came home (or not coming home at all), Hickory found out what was happening and put a stop to it the hard way. As a member of Jade Mountain Guild, he confronted his brother's "friends" and put them all in the hospital, but was himself injured in the process. It thankfully wasn't anything fatal, but the guilt Forb felt for his folly, the shame and rage and regret, was too much for him.

Forb tried to run away from home, knowing that recently his trying to help his family with his pickpocketing and looting with his friends had caused more trouble than help. He was was also angry at his family at the time, and Hickory specifically, for parting him with Sear. He didn't get very far before the middle sibling, Holly, caught up and quite literally dragged him back home. Despite his large stature, she was larger than him and had recently begun training for the military and was already beefing up. He went kicking and screaming, but was reduced to tears by the time they reached their little cave at the edge of the town in the mountain. He just wanted to be back with Sear again. He just wanted to be with the dragon he loved, why couldn't his family understand that?

After figuring out what to do with him and talking it over between themselves, Flint, Sparky, and Forb's older siblings seemed to reach an agreement. They congregated in the living room and let Forb know: to try to improve his temperament and try to help him recover from his two years of trauma induced by Sear, they would be attempting to send him to Jade Mountain Guild Academy the following year. If not there, he would be attending the school Hickory went to. Forb wanted to beg not to go, but it seemed a far better option than the alternative, and he resigned himself to pack his bags for the next school year and prepare for the long flight down the mountain range.

At seven years old with no good record, he was of course rejected from the academy practically once he got there. Of course, of course they didn't want someone with such a spotty past in their academy and so close to the guild, whether or not his father and brother vouched for him. So, he was sent to the SkyWing guild school, where he would begin what he considered to be the most hellish years of his life.

Young Adult: As a seven-year-old dragon on the cusp of adulthood, Forb was one of the older students in the first year at his school. Whispers quickly spread about him - someone who knew someone whose cousin worked at the academy portion of Jade Mountain had apparently heard of his immediate rejection after flying all the way there. He had thought he would never be teased again once he was under Sear's wing, but dragons started to say things about him. They started to taunt him, saying he would never be able to make it in this school, and that at least he got entry and not someone else, because it would just be less competition for a future position at Jade Mountain Guild.

It wasn't a semester in before Forb knew he had had fucking enough of the whispers behind his back and the taunts to his face. He would be putting up with their bullshit no more. Sear hadn't protected him just because it was a whim, or because they were in love, it was because Sear saw something great in Forb! Where he was failing all of his classes before out of sheer unwillingness to work, he was suddenly motivated to outdo everyone in his class. With his sharp intelligence he aced every written test and outsmarted every physical activity. His sudden switch to A+ student shut up the larger portion of the dragons at the academy, but some of them insisted on continuing to agitate him, often mocking him openly in front of the others in their class.

Unknowingly to the other dragons, Forb excelled especially in one thing: watching.

He knew all of their secrets by now - none of them were very clever about hiding them. And with his ability to read others' emotions, well, some might say he had an unfair advantage. For example: Forb knew that Pine, a popular choice for head of the class, had a crush on Pansy, who was often picked on and considered the ugliest in the class because of the scars across her face and wings. Dot, a big, burly girl who thought it was funny to tease Forb for his lankiness, was afraid of squirrels. Other things he learned just by watching, even catching some of his classmates in the act of petty crimes like minor theft. It would hurt them so much to have these things slip out, wouldn't it? None of them would have a chance at getting into the guild if this sort of thing got out, didn't they know that?

And suddenly, the whispers stopped. No more jeers, taunts, or prods at his character. No one wanted anyone else to find out what Forb knew. He gained a reputation, of course, and no one really wanted to be his friend besides a couple of suck-ups who he promptly rejected, but he was fine with being alone. Before Sear, he'd been alone, and now that Sear was gone, he would be alone again. He recognized after a while that Sear had been horrible to him and for him; he had manipulated Forb, a younger, more naive dragon, just a dragonet at the time, into doing a lot of awful things. He'd gotten Forb to steal and lie and fight for him, and many other things - Sear wasn't a good dragon, not at all. But he'd taught Forb a lot, and he could never get rid of the lingering regret in his heart - not for loving Sear, but for realizing that loving him had warped Forb into a dragon that might never feel whole again.

It wasn't as though Forb was going to ditch all of the traits Sear imparted, though. His wisdom came in handy much, much too often to let go of.

He came to the end of his education without much further incident (though any that did occur were quickly tamped out). Here he was at a crossroads: he could leave the school to go back to petty crimes and forget about his family, he could find Sear and see if he would take Forb back. ... Or, he could do what everyone thought he couldn't; not out of a lack of ability in the field now, but because of his plain inability to work with others. He could join Jade Mountain Guild after their academy had rejected him, and he could prove to them how incredibly wrong they were.

What are your character's goals and motivations? Why do they want to join the guild? How do they believe it will work towards their goals?
He wants to be in the guild just to prove to others (and maybe a little bit to himself) that he can do it without getting kicked out. He just wants to prove other people wrong. Plus, he's heard the guild pays handsomely, and he wouldn't say no to getting a damn good wage.
