Description So called because 'Horrible green dress' just wasn't as catchy. Lets be honest, even if the dress is nice, the colour is terrible. This photo doesn't really do the colour justice, see [link]

This dress is a practice run for another dress I am planning on making, I wanted to sort out all the problems with the pattern using a cheap fabric before making the real dress.

The front panel is plastic boned using channels in the inner fabric to leave the panel smooth, although I think I can see the boning slightly. The bustle is interesting, I didn't really know how to do a bustle so I have ended up with something that reminds me of a turtle shell . The black skirt is not something I made, its just there to better illustrate where the skirt ends and the busle begins.

The skirt is seperate to the corset-jacket-busle combo.

Although not perfect, I like the way the pattern turned out so in addition to the dress I was going to make anyway, I have made my graduation ball (prom) dress to the same pattern

haha, love the title! I was wondering, would you be interested in making my prom dress? I need a seamstress, and of course i will pay for materials and your time! If you will, would you need a pattern or can you eyeball it? Please let me know, thanks!

Hi. Flattered that you ask, but I'm in the U.K. It would be quite expensive on your part with the current exchange rate and the cost of shipping, and of course you would not be able to have a fitting. There are quite a few American seamstresses on devart that would be able to make you dress, do you already have a design in mind? I could give you a list of the top devart seamstresses in the US if you like.

Gorgeous - I love the top - bustles are great! I see what you mean about the colour - the actual shade is stunning, it's come out more teal than green here. I think it would also suit being done in crimson velvet, really beautiful shape

That BUSTLE!!!

... I LOVE green ~ it's the black skirt that was a turn off to me... Only one way to do color, I think... Like you mean it

It was my first attempt at a bustle too, I had no idea where I should start. The skirt that goes with the outfit is green, I took a photo of the bustle with a black skirt so you could see where the skirt started and the bustle finished. I don't like this colour much, but was pleased with the way the dress came out.

the colour is not quite what I like, but I love the dress! I'm working on a similar one at the moment (so far only did the bum roll *cough* *G*)

Nah, I don't like the colour either. Good luck with the dress, they take time, don't worry

I really like the skirt--my art history project had sort of the pouf-y effect too, heh heh. It's a lot of fun to make and looks really cool when it's done on fabric like tafetta, don't you think?

Yeah, it is quite fun and very satisfying when its done

OoO... and just my - A thin layer of wool or wool felt between the fashion fabric and the lining/boning layer will take care of the boning issue... not that it's even too noticeable (and even if you can see it a bit, at least you can tell people that you actually took the time to bone it instead of letting it wrinkle)

LotD In reply to ThimblesSaveLives [2005-10-06 08:44:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that is a good idea. On one of my recent dresses I have used cotton drill for the boning channels as I thought something that stiff may prevent the boning 'lumps' from showing through. It didn't even occur to me to put something to pad out the layer between the boning and the stomacher. Thankyou

ThimblesSaveLives In reply to LotD [2005-10-06 14:21:09 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it didn't occur to me either. I made my first dress when I was 14 and even though I made a corset, I lightly boned the bodice to keep it from bending. The boning showed through just a smidge; at the Ren faire some psycho garb snark decided to make a big deal over the fact that the boning was showing just a bit.... people are insane. So then I started padding it out. ^_~

Aww thats mean. Some people get really up themselves don't they? I'd be thrilled to find other people that could sew at all.

WooO! That's a pretty design! Yay for original patterns! And Yay for your buslte too! (they're a pain in the buttocks aren't they) ^_~ The colour doesn't look too horrible on my monitor (but I have the contrast waaaaay down at the moment) Ah, anyway, I can't wait to see the final photo of your promenade gown! +fav teehee

Thankyou. Bustles are a bit awkward, thats why I needed this test run. The next submission in my gallery will be with a new improved bustle

i like the color! though i can see it being very nice in black velvet. maybe with a formal choker style necklace. black beads or crystal. nice shape, and i do like the style of that bustle, though sadly i don't think i'd need one

LotD In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2005-07-12 13:09:37 +0000 UTC]

Bustles are great aren't they? I also feel that my rear allows me to happily wear a bustle without a pad underneath the original bustle idea was to make your waist look tiny in comparison, so big bums were a good thing

Andrejuno [2005-07-11 22:19:15 +0000 UTC]

I think the bustle is an asset to this outfit, keep it! keep it!!!! Its really interesting and I like the rippling effect and the front of the skirt drapes marvelously... the cut of the corset, it definately interesting, i like the slightly angled seams... its slims, but subtley accentuates the figure... because it cuts into the waist, but then realigns with the hips... which works for a dramatic effect!

What colour and material you hoping to do the final version in?

LotD In reply to TigerSwift [2005-07-04 13:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Well the prom dress is black steamed velvet, which seems to work really well. The original dress this pattern is for is to be in black and white stripes so I was limited to a cotton polyester blend, it doesn't have the give that steamed velvet does but that might just improve my posture
