Description
Name: Nauja (means seagull)
Age: 2 ½ years
Gender: Female
Breed: Siberian Husky/ Alaskan Husky mix
Height: 21 in.
Weight: 50 lbs
Build: She is long legged and awkward because she is still relatively young. That was one of the reasons that her handler named her after a seagull. She is fast because of this, but still has to work on her endurance. Her energy comes in sprinting bursts. When she grows older, she becomes elegant because of her build, but for now, she looks gangly and awkward.
Accessories: Her harness, which is made of layers of caribou skin and lined with seal fur. The outside is decorated with dyed porcupine quills and the fasteners are made of carved lightweight shale.
Tribe: Illimar
Position: Team
Handler: Her human is an older man who has been raising dogs for years. Nauja is the offspring of one of his most successful dogs, and also one of his last litters, so he prizes her very highly. He is mainly a fur trader and trapper, although he dabbles in carving as well. Since he has gotten older though, his arthritis has kept him from carving except in the warmer months.
Personality:Nauja is young, and so still has a lot to learn. She tends to get under peoples feet, and can talk a dogs ear off. She is very enthusiastic and loving, but it can get kind of annoying sometimes. She believes herself to be fast, and that makes her competitive. She is always up for a race, or a competition of some sort. If someone talks down to her or badly of her, she is hurt easily and her mood drops dramatically. She doesn't get mad easily, but she does get frustrated if something doesn't work out how she had planned. Because she is always trying to please her master, she is innovative and creative. Sometimes this can get her into trouble. Every once in a while, she will have a hair-brained idea that puts her and anyone that goes along with her into danger. This includes getting lost, being chased by an angry mother caribou, and trying to cross thawing rives. She doesn't think of the consequences, she just launches into her plans.
She is rather innocent, still trying to figure things out that the older dogs already know. An older dog would know not to take a fish from a bear cub. Nauja would not. She would think it's funny and try to get the bear to play.
One thing that she has learned for sure is respect for her elders. She may not always listen to their advice, but she will for sure listen to their commands. This was drilled into her by her handler, who has trained many, many dogs before her. This makes her a wonderful asset to have on a dog team. When she has someone commanding her as a team leader, she is in her element. She follows the rules, when she knows them or has payed enough attention to remember them.
- Positive Traits: Energetic, Innovative, Obedient, Enthusiastic, Respectful
- Negative Traits: Picky, Competitive, Easily frustrated, Doesn't think things through, Takes everything to heart
Goal: To serve her handler to the best of her ability, even if it means doing something stupid.
History: Nauja is the pup of a celebrated and successful sled dog, and is owned by a man who had bred meany dogs before her. The man kept her because she is part of one of the last litters that he bred. All of the others in her litter were traded or given away, but he decided to keep her because he saw her great potential. Because of this, she has been raised in almost a spoiled manner, with her trainer making sure that she gets as much good food and practice as possible. She has run a lot of miles for being as young as she is.
Her father was old when she was born, and was put to sleep when she was a few months old. She doesn't remember him very well, but doesn't really miss him much. He had many puppies, and she was just one of many. Her mother, however, she loved very much. She was also a sled dog, and was killed by a cut to her leg that was unnoticed and thus became infected. She died when Nauja was a little over a year and a half old. Nauja misses her fiercely, and doesn't like to be reminded of her, even though it's been a year since her passing.
Because her owner doesn't own any other dogs anymore, Nauja often goes out around the tribe to play with the other dogs. She has made quite a few friends this way, and is generally well liked, if sometimes a little bit annoying. She likes to play out by the water, chasing the seagulls that are her namesake. This got her into hot water once (or actually cold water) because she fell through the ice. She manged to get herself out in time and run back to her handler's shelter, but because of this incident she has become more wary of crossing ice.
