very pretty, she's a beautiful render and I love the patterns on her clothing!

Does the software you're using have ambient occlusion passes? That would help define a dark edge where her arm rests on the wall and really ground her in the scene.

Thank you. Some people, in this case parrotdolphin, create and sell material/pattern that we can use in the material room. This allows combining outfits from different sources and to create something original.

Yes, the software allows ambient occlusion and I use it but I'm not sure if I can do it in a separate pass, I'll have to check. Ambient occlusion eats up memory and have longer render times. Since I started rendering larger images and at 300 dpi, I've been having memory challenges lol Why I started doing simpler images in my software (Poser) rendering mostly the character, hair and clothes and painting/composing my background in Photoshop. When you have a prop (building) in your scene, you start having problems. I cheated here and didn't get away with it lol I rendered the background building, the character and the railing in different passes. Since the railing wasn't rendered with the character she couldn't project a shadow on it. I couldn't quite fix the shadow in Photoshop afterwards as I tried to compose the different pieces, part of which I had to erase to bring backward/forward the character or the railing. It was very frustrating lol My goal is to learn more and more digital painting so I can have more freedom and only render my characters with Poser and do the rest in Photoshop. I'd like to be able to paint hair and clothes eventually Now I retouch hair, skin and clothes in Photoshop to give a more painterly look and fix render glitches.

we use maya at work and render ambient occlusion as a separate pass and add it to the composited image as a multiply layer. Of course we have a whole render farm, so it whips through renders - I can imagine the times on a single machine would be a lot different. Painting it in Photoshop is probably a more feasible option

Nowadays it seems easier to do AO as a matter of course.

hmm her arm doesn't have a shadow on the rock... nor does the plant...

I really love the hair though! And her skin <3

I think you should've picked another color for the flower on the hair... or made the scene brighter, but that'd compromise your concept..

louly In reply to faithroll [2010-04-08 15:32:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know about the shadows... I had to make some compromises as I had to render in multiple passes because of memory problems. I didn't totally succeed in fixing the errors in postwork in Photoshop. The 3D software I use doesn't always comply and after spending hours without being completely satisfied, sometimes I need to post anyway. Plus, I was showcasing the scene prop for a friend.
