Zuko isn't sure how to handle the fact that since joining the gaang, he's pretty much been at the whim of Katara+everyone else. So he decides that he's fed up with it and consults Toph, who is wise like Iroh and totally the child of Chuck Norris."Hey Toph?" Zuko's voice cracked slightly at the thought of her beating him up. He wasn't ready nor fully trained for that sort of boss. He was on level one, for goodness sake! How could he beat Toph, who was a boss that belonged on Level Unattainable?
"Yeah, Sparky?"
Zuko sighed in relief, wiping sweat from his brow. She was in a merciful mood today. He took a deep breath, and let out everything he needed to say in one, swift sentence. Better not keep her waiting.
"What? I can't understand you!"
Her voice rose in anger. He whimpered.
"Uhm, I need help."
Her eyebrow arched, "With what?"
"Well, you know how Katara wants to raep me? And Sokka throws food at me and Aang glares at me? And how Momo always hits me because Appa is attracted to me?"
"Uh, yeah. What about all that?"
"I need to know how to--"
"Oh."
She smiled deviously, and Zuko gulped. She placed one hand on her hip and gestured towards him.
"Sit down, Sparky. I'm gonna teach you how to be a man."

No, you're not. My dislike for Mai has absolutely nothing to do with Zutara, honestly. I don't think she's a gold digger, I just feel like she holds Zuko back. She was, at least in the way I interpreted the relationship, supposed to symbolize the part of Zuko that wasn't truly him. In other words, she shouldn't still be with Zuko, because she holds him back.
And now we're supposed to believe that she's "CHANGED LOL HAY ZUKO" at the end of the series? I really just don't get the whole relationship, since the only way it would work for Zuko is if she did do a 360 character development. And SRSLY, I don't think Mai has it in her to completely change her views unless she's desperate and clingly like Aang is to Katara. /joke
To each his own, though. It's just my opinion.

She irks me as a character. She is every bit as pompous as Azula (think rose-petal tart *gag*) and the I'm boooored gets old, really fast.
The only redeeming factor she seems to have is her love for Zuko. IF you can call that a 'redeeming factor.' I mean, I give her credit for saving him, for standing up to Azula- that takes guts. But you're absolutely right: she represents Zuko’s old life. If Zuko had listened to her, he would be on the wrong side when the comet came. And she tells him off at the Boiling Rock for betraying his country. (but then she *magically* gets to join in the happy ending anyway) And if Zuko had not been on that gondolier, she would have killed everyone else for Azula without batting an eye. What would Zuko have done then? Also, it seems like had she supported him in *any* other way she would be essentially compromising her obviously strongly held values for someone else.
I really think it's kind of pathetic. The only thing that can make her 'care' about anything is romantic love. It smacks of the kind of 'reliance' on romance that makes feminists' hackles rise.

Exactly. She is very much like Azula, except she lacks passion for pretty much anything.
I only would call her love a redeeming factor since it's the only thing that made her feel any semblance of emotion. However for her to only care about Zuko, and nothing else, not the bad state the fire nation is in or the people who have sufferd--that makes her a fool. And exactly! She and Zuko have completely different ideas of what the fire nation should be. For Mike and Bryan to just throw her into the heroine-happy ending plot made me so mad, because she didn't fight for Zuko for the sake of the fire nation or that she believed what he was doing was right--she did it because she had the hots for him. Shallow and stupid.
Hahaha, I'm no feminist but it certainly upset me when the finale came around and everyone just made out with each other.
