Description Very old, weird and definitely magical
Okay... I've been so tired of all the realistic, safe pictures of animals and I've just had to paint something non-realistic and funny And this was fun, that's for sure - I finally tried a new paper, Arches hot-press - it doesn't have such a smooth feeling I like on my illustration boards, but it much better allows wet in wet technique.
Original is for sale... if you're interested, just send me a note or an email and I'll be happy to reply

Watercolour on watercolour paper, 29 cm x 42 cm

Beautiful painting! I love the colours you have used. I use arches hot pressed too and agree that it isn't quite as smooth as the illustration board

Thank you!
Well I recently found out that it depends on weight of the paper - Arches hot press 140 lb paper is very smooth. But I actually like that the heavyweight paper has a bit of "tooth", it works well for me. I don't like extremely smooth surfaces for my watercolors

ellfi In reply to LucieOn [2011-05-13 11:12:27 +0000 UTC]

I use the heavy too, I find the smooth is easier for my penwork tho

LucieOn In reply to ellfi [2011-05-14 18:00:47 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine that the heavy-weight Arches isn'T very suitable for ink and penwork in generall. I guess that the smoother the better for pens? I have some freakishly smooth illustration boards at home, which I bought when I didn't understand the labels much - and I have no idea what I should do with them

ellfi In reply to LucieOn [2011-05-14 18:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Well as long as its hot pressed the Arches is fine for pen and ink, and yes the smoother the better
Maybe you could do some pen work on your freakishly smooth illustration boards?

LucieOn In reply to ellfi [2011-05-14 18:26:42 +0000 UTC]

I've never really been very good with pen. I actually really admire anyyone who can make decent picture with it

ellfi In reply to LucieOn [2011-05-14 19:28:44 +0000 UTC]

I find it a different approach than with painting....even tho I do paint I still "think" in pen if that makes sense

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucieOn In reply to ellfi [2011-05-14 19:48:27 +0000 UTC]

It is, definitely very different. You can't repair anything and every mistakes horribly stands out, that's why I'm scared of this technique
And I do understand, I think - I always think "in watercolor" - even when I'm drawing with graphite or coloured pencils

sorry to interrupt...

this:
> "You can't repair anything and every mistakes horribly stands out..."

is only the case with writing-pens and writing-ink on "normal" paper.

it is totally different and VERY easy with technical pens and pigment-ink on paper/board with a sort of "closed" surface, where the ink doesn't sink into the paper, but stays on the surface.

i did technical drawings many years ago (before computers came to the offices) - keeping maps and plans of cables up to date. First thing in the morning was to get the razor-blades out and erase the old cables and draw the new one to the new correct place.
You just scrape the old ink off the surface. It's fun, simple and quite relaxing.

If done not too violently, you can draw and "repair" on the same spot many times.

Great picture and incredible gallery!
