I use a really light pencil it says 2H on it and then I kinda go over that with others. I am confused to to how the whole, numbers = softness of graphite thing.

ahh yep well the it goes
9H,8H,6H,4H,2H,H,F,HB,B,2B,4B,6B,8B,9B
so the 9H is the hardest pencil, and they get softer as you go along. So 9B is really soft and dark, good for drawing dark sections of drawings, whereas anything with a H is quite hard and wont be as easy to blend. So 2H is a good one for a initial sketch but i would use softer pencils for the rest of the drawing.
