Description
"These two are born of three things; first, my absolutely straight love for Gwen from League of Legends; second, my absolutely homosexual love for Bridget on Guilty Gear Strive; and third, my desire to expand upon human and spirit bonding in my work of Storm Path.
I wont be writing up a history here for these two just yet because there are multiple avenues I could take. But the base idea is that Sasha is from a land that was presided over by a spider spirit, Mahal. The little spirit on his shoulder, actually. But when the scorpion spirit Aramach attacked their home and devoured her, he decided to show some… “mercy”, and spat Mahal back out, but now as a powerless, tiny spirit. Almost a complete base form of what she once started as. To save her life, Sasha bonded with her, sharing his soul and power with her. In the same way that Lua the Kirin now boosts Zero’s abilities through their bond, the spider spirit—already the source of Sasha’s powers and techniques—now boosts his past what they once were.
Bonding with a spirit is not a difficult, or even complicated process. At the bare minimum, you make a promise. The two are not locked to one another through anything more than a vow, working in much the same way as any mundane friendship or marriage. The true test of the bond, though, comes through the two protecting and serving one another. As the mystic artist becomes stronger over time and has formed a bond with a spirit, so too does that spirit itself grow stronger, eventually taking on a human form. But for now, Mahal will have to settle for being a little backpack for Sasha.
This works hand in hand with the strange relationship spirits have with both the world around them, and the humans who serve and oftentimes worship them. The spirits are not content with having a world that just is. They often change things about the world around them in ways that are sometimes small, but oftentimes in ways that are drastic and sometimes even dangerous or hazardous. Mahal might like a world where plants can produce spider silk, allowing her human followers to harvest it for sale, thus bringing them wealth. Lua might like a world that rapidly produces herbs that can mend mind, body, and spirit. A fire monkey spirit might like a world to be like a giant, blazing forest of living fire, charred flesh, and blackened ash.
These changes in the world and people are known as a spirits domain. These lands are often small, and are only afforded to those spirits who have managed to gather a following of humans to worship them and to form a symbiotic relationship with. Those spirits not able to form their own domain—in the instances of spirits like Lua and Mahal—will find other avenues to increase their power. Thus, this is where Bonding comes in. They are limited in the scope of what their domains are capable of, but they can spread the influence of that domain like seeds. As an example;
Lua is a vegetarian. She eats nothing but fruits, nuts, and berries. And when she digests and passes that food, the result carries a measure of her power. That fertilizes that particular patch of ground—she never goes indoors, and never somewhere that isn’t easily accessible—and sprouts a plant of the same kind as what she ate. The fruits and the like that this resultant plant produces mends wounds, soothes the soul, and rejuvenates the mind. And when an animal or a human or a spirit partakes of the resultant fruit and passes that elsewhere out in the open world, that plant is created elsewhere, and the cycle goes on, but only in a small area around the original.
Better yet, Lua’s stomach is essentially its own… well, because I’m dumb and do not know the technical terms, let’s just call it a cross-breeding factory. Say she eats a berry and a nut at the same time. The plant she produces can contain a sweet, jelly-like substance contained within a hardened shell. And other such combinations, making the fruit she produces delicious and highly desirable by intrepid entrepreneurs. And let’s say that entrepreneur decides that she wants to take that plant and monopolize it? She might find that it wilts quickly. However, if she simply goes out and harvests the plant, then she can come back the next day and find that even more fruits than were there before have sprouted, allowing her to create more. Why? Because this fruit is meant for everybody and everything. Not just her customers.
Another example;
Mahal can spin spools of her own silk to give, perhaps, as a gift to a tailor in a small town. That tailor uses her threads to create a simple jacket that is breathable, absorbs moisture, reduces friction and chafing, and is as hard as any suit of plate armor. His gratitude for making such an exquisite article would then have a domino effect in his shop, causing all of his threads to take on aspects of Mahal’s silk. However, only his shop can produce such clothes now, giving him a massive step up in the market. The silk does not go away because he is actively making sure he uses it for Mahal’s wishes; to give to others as a gift, and to use it to increase his wealth, thus helping himself become more comfortable.
But then say his business has now exploded. He has people from all over the land coming to buy his incredible clothes. So, he needs help. He can’t find much help, but happens to get in touch with a fashionista. She loves the silk so much that she doesn’t just provide him with the same simple, but functional clothes he likes to make. She makes works of art. This sells to an influential client. Now, works created by these two become naturally beautiful, and functional as the threads—and the spiritual power they carry—guide the hands of the tailor and the fashionista.
Spirits, humans, the mystic arts and more make this world move, making sure that nothing is taken for granted. Just like in my other post, where Soul was talking about how people have separated the Four elements while teaching Zero about the Four Corners Rotation, people have divided themselves. They mistakenly believe that humans, spirits, and the world are three separate entities that happen to coexist. But when they come together, or come back together, the world is far stronger for it, and far better off."
