Salem: Um... I don't know. Why?
Usher: Why? That's the question everyone always asks, Little One. I can remember being asked that very thing myself after I swallowed my Mother's thimble. I'd torn my pants hopping over the fence to steal back my boots from an ill-mannered neighbor! Such a rapscallion he was, always making off with things that didn't belong to him. I can remember the day he stole a silver plate and three potatoes! The theft of a single potato is rudeness, but to take three? So unnecessary! I allowed him to get away with many a pilferage because I hadn't the time to tail him around the swamp. But the day he took the boots off my feet, Usher decided that he had had enough! So, Sweetling, what is an irate man to do? Well, I went after him and he leapt over the fence like an excited chipmunk! Although Usher is strikingly handsome and devilishly clever, I am not so good at jumping. And so the pants were torn, you see? Kind Mother was going to repair them, and as I watched, I wondered, what if I took to sleepwalking in the night and accidentally swallowed a sewing needle? The very insides of me would be pricked! Horror! The only way for old Usher to protect himself from such a fate was surely to swallow the thimble! My Mother, perceptive woman that she was, noticed my sudden bout of pica, and inquired the reason for my actions. So what do you think I said to her, my Little?
Salem: ... what?
Usher: I haven't the slightest idea!
