Miyatori soon bore a child to Udo, whom she named 'Sayuri' after her mother.
The child was, however, blind at birth, according to the doctor who delivered her.

Miyatori prayed to her Spirits, the Spirits of the Moon and of the Ocean.

Both spirits answered her prayer. The Spirit of the Ocean touched Sayuri's eyes, and gifted her with sight. The Spirit of the Ocean touched Sayuri's heart, and gave her a warm, kind spirit, always open and always accepting.

The Ocean's gift caused Sayuri's eyes to be their characteristic misty blue color, and also caused them to have the strange trait of varying in coloration according to her mood.

The Moon's gift caused Sayuri to have white hair framing her face.

Being the daughter of a reputed beauty and a handsome Fire Nation soldier (Udo was far more attractive than his brother, Zhao), the child was so beautiful even as a babe that Miyatori decided to present Sayuri to the royal court.

Fire Lord Azulon was impressed with her pretigious pedigree. He forced his son Ozai to have her betrothed to Ozai's only son, the young Prince Zuko, who was not even a year old at the time.

This betrothal was deemed questionable by the citizens of the Fire Nation, but it was accepted, and Sayuri's life up until she was five years old was wonderful, filled with parties and royalty and special treatment.

Unfortunately, during a vacation to the hot springs in the north of the Fire Nation, Udo, Miyatori, and Sayuri were ambushed and pillaged in their coach by a group of nomads.

Udo and Miyatori were killed.

Little Sayuri had barely turned five years old.

She was left buried in the rubble of the coach and her parents' dead bodies.

Somehow, she dragged herself out and to the side of the road, where she fainted.

When she awoke, she was in a warm cave. A long, scaly, gray-blue body was draped around her. She looked, and saw that it was a winged water dragon who had rescued her.

That dragon's name was Suzu. He had found her because he had sensed the aura of the Moon and Ocean coming off of her. He was, after all, a water dragon.

He nursed her back to health and raised her for the rest of her life, until she was sixteen, blessing her with powers that no normal human could ever have. He gave her a 'soulname,' which only exists among dragons: "Hana." He told her that this soulname was not to be told to ANYONE, or else that person would have complete control over Sayuri.

He also trained her bending skills, helped her find her affectionbending, and granted her supernatural perception skills.

He also gave her the ability learn any form of physical activity or martial art with incredible ease by mixing a little of his magic-laden blood into hers.

When she turned sixteen, she decided to leave to find a new life, away from her guardian dragon. Finally, she came to the Fire Nation, trailed by her famous reputation. It looked very familiar to her.

She went to the royal court out of curiosity.

Ozai recognized her, because she resembled her mother. He hated her for her betrothal to his son; after all, he wanted control over his son's fate, being the power-hungry dictator he was at the time. Utilizing Suzu's power, which she called on to help her escape the prison, she broke through the heavy walls, her eyes pale white, surrounded by an eerie glow.

Ozai saw her power, as did the rest of the Fire Nation.

The Fire Lord then became bent on capturing her for his purposes of capturing the Avatar; somehow, he thought that he could brainwash her into using her powers for his benefit.

Sayuri, however, left, using Suzu's wings to fly her far away from the Nation she had been born in.

She found herself over the ocean, flying without a destination.

After so much travel over open, empty water, she was tired, and ailing, and needed rest. The air had also grown cold; she figured that she was somewhere near the North Pole, using her extraordinary powers of perception that Suzu had granted her with earlier in her life.

That was when she came upon a floating mass of driftwood. It would suffice to rest on, for a while.

But, as she came closer to the driftwood, she realized that there were two bodies floating on the largest piece. There was also a makeshift sail that had been erected on the raft.

She used Suzu's insulation as a water dragon to land in the water and sneak up on the floating wood.

When she peered over the edge, she saw that the two people were alive, but sleeping. One was an older man, potbellied, with whitish gray hair. The other was a young man with a ponytail topknot, and a scar-scathed face.

She felt a strange pang in her heart when she looked at the young man; it was a rush of feeling that clenched her heart and made her feel an intense wave of belonging and comfort.

But it was gone before she could truly register its real meaning...

Deciding that she wasn't really all that tired, she made up her mind to find out who these two men were, and began to follow them from that day forth.

When the two men finally came to a bathhouse in a sakura forest after much travel over the sea, Sayuri decided to reveal her presence to them.

But the two men became involved in a desperate struggle to escape the clutches of Azula, the fire princess--someone that Sayuri barely remembered from her childhood and from the rumors she'd heard of the princess.

The two men ran off.
Sayuri followed them in secret.

She watched as the two of them took refuge beside a stream, and removed their topknots from their hair.

She watched over them as they escaped into the forest and began a life as nomads.

She watched them as a guardian angel; the Angel of Water and Fire.

During the time she watched them, she finally realized who they were: Zuko and Iroh, two faces from her past. She remembered Iroh from his silliness; she remembered Zuko from the times they had romped together as children.

She also felt that she should remember something else about Zuko; something significant. But she couldn't recall anything that held weight.

When Zuko decided to take his leave of his Uncle, and became a nomad himself, she was faced with a tough decision; follow Zuko, or Iroh?

Well, actually, the decision wasn't all that hard; she had come to love Zuko intensely over the time she'd spent following them. It wasn't just a crush; she knew it was true love.

At first, Zuko thought he was hallucinating, thanks to all the strange things that had happened to him over the past few days.

But when she became more solid, and told him that she was Ikumatsu, his guardian angel, he was amazed; he realized that she had been that comforting presence he had constantly felt. Tears came to his eyes, and he began to weep.

But Sayuri felt terrible for lying to him and not telling him her true identity; after all, if she remembered him, shouldn't he remember her?

So she sat down across from him, and in the firelight, revealed that she was not really a guardian angel, but Sayuri, daughter of Udo and Miyatori.

Zuko gasped, recognizing her; the white hair that framed her face gave her away immediately, as did her strange, haunting blue eyes.

They spent that entire night chatting about the past and their childhoods, and finally, falling in love with each other irrevocably.
