Description Nikki one of my budgies flying fastly around in my room.

Wingclipping is cruel! Budgies have their wings to fly with them, they are no penguins!

(there are exeptions when the budgie is ill or disabled and could hurt itself - we discussed it on my photo "against wingclipping and I respect those exeptions! But making a perfectly healthy budgie disabled, only so that he gets tame more easily is clearly cruel cause the bird cannot choose anymore if it wants to come or wants to fly away from you)

My budgies love to fly and do so the whole day. The disabled budgie I had some years ago was very unhappy and could only sit in her cage all day long.

thank you, I had a hard time 2009, 2 budgies died. But I got 3 new ones which I still have today. THis year I had to let the vet put down Tiko, and got a new one from the animal shelter. He is lovely and fits in very good into the group with the other 3.

please tell me that your budgie is not solitary living, or will get a partner soon. Keeping them solitary is against their social nature as flock birds.

Dnightshade In reply to Lunchi [2012-06-06 22:05:53 +0000 UTC]

no we don't have other budgies or intend to get anymore at this time. for several reasons. one being that sky sometimes has his horny momment XD another being that when they tend not to pay atention to u and not bond with u if there are other budgies. plus he is getting old, if we got another bird now, it would only get heartbroken when this one dies.

don't worry, sky never has to worry about being lonely. since I'm always home, he always has me for company and he
s always doing everything with me, even waddling on the keyboards while I'm typing lol XD we r thick as thiefs, and practilly inseprable. I know budgies r vary social birds, thats why I do what I can to make sure he never feels lonely and show how much I love him.

It is indeed not easy to get a partner for an already old budgie, because new young babies will only make the old bird confused. They like it calm and a young bird is full of action usually. But if you really love your budgie, you should try to see the world through his eyes, not only through your eyes. Same counts for your mom. it is true that a lonely budgie easier clings to a human - the human who cares for him, and that he more easily starts to speak human words. But for what price? Because the bird wants to get tame and wants to repeat the words you speak to him? - No, he only does it, because he has no other choice. He has no partner of his own species, which is the same as someone would force you to live in a flock of birds, without other humans to speak to or play with. But would you be happy without other people around? without internet, without your family or friends? Only birds to play with and talk to? Who do not understand your words, and chirp and sing all day?
It is the same sad situation for a lonely budgie (or any other social being on earth, be it a monkey, a dolphin, an elephant, swarmfish, social flockbird or rabbit...). He is forced to connect to his owner and to pass the time with him. But he would be much happier if the owner gave him the choice to connect with his own kind. Because this is his true nature: To live in a flock with other budgies and communicate with them in his own language. Not repeating human words which make no sense to him at all.

mom and I arn't heartless, we do care about him ALOT. and try to makes thing easier and comfortable for him. when and if we ever get budgies after this one, we will try to get two so they arn't lonely. but u got to remember that we don't have alot of money and we got this one for free.

we r good owners, and know how to take care of budgies.

I am sure you are careing very well about him. I did not mean to offend you in any way.
I am glad to hear you plan to get 2, next time you get a budgie though. Sometimes you can be lucky that people want to get rid of their budgies and give them away for free or for very little money

thank u for being understanding. I do take good care of my budgie. I know its hard for him not having any other budgies around to hang out with, so I do what I can to fill that void anyway I can. I do feel very hurt when people think I'm not taking good care of my budgie. thank u for understanding that. I don't take judgementle stuff very well.

we both love animals alot so its understandable that we both want others to be well informed about the animal's needs and their natural lifestyle.

I volenteer at the humane sociaty as a cat socializer, making sure the cats get the love and atention they need as well as help them warm up to people better so they can get adopted. there a some few cats that have had it hard and are very skitish and shy around people, so I help them overcome their issues. though I am able to go once a week cause we have so many volenteers.

by spending time with either the cats at the humane sociaty or my budgie, I learn more and more about them and their behaviors everyday. having an animal, u r always learning something new and better ways to take care of um. it also help u get into the animals head and see things from their perspective, so I'm always learning something from my budgie and the cats at the humane sociaty.

Thats a cool job! I worked at several animal shelters for some years, it is so rewarding when the animals are finally treated right at the shelter and then later even find a new nice home

I know right? it may not pay, but it is an awsome feeling knowing u helped an animal in need ^_^

just this tuesday, we have a cat named bruce (though its a girl XD go figure) and she was a very timid and scared cat, she spent alot of time hiding. when I first came in, she stayed put and didn't come out, but after a while of me talking to her, speaking soothingly, and gently peting her (she hid but let me pet her). she finally calmed and came out a few times to eat and then went back to her comfort zone, but she kept coming out and going back. I'm glad she felt comfortable enough around me to come out. she has been there a few weeks. and now she finally got adopted YAY!!!! ^_^

sigh, yeah I get what ur saying. and I do try to look at things from his perspective. do u even know how we got him? we got him from my aunt's mother inlaw, she had found out that she has alergies and can't handle the feathers so she was gonna just open the cage and let him go. not a caring thing to do considering this is not the budgie's natural habbitat. the little guy would have died from starvation or frozen to death or even gotten eaten by a hawk. fortunetly she had told us about what she was going to do and we took him in. he has been very much happier since hes been with us. with her, he was cage bound and didn't get to do alot. so he is lucky. and mom and I treat him and love him like a child, like family. he isn't a pet, he's family. and even though theres a language barrier, we do understand each other sometimes. he gets lots of love and affection, and he seems very happy. sadly we can't go buying another budgie many cause we can't afford it and we have been having money issues. mom and I don't intent to get another budgie for a while after this one. this budgie was an adopt/rescue. so we do everything we can to make this budgie happy and not feel lonely. and like I mentioned before, he does talk to the birds outside, so even with us, he is never totally alone.

I am glad to hear you rescued the little one. That was a very nice thing to do. A friend of mine had found my budgie Kathi (RIP) on the street, too and rescued her. I agree, that they cannot survive alone in the wild. It was a very good thing, you heard about it and took him!

Dnightshade In reply to Lunchi [2012-06-06 21:55:32 +0000 UTC]

actually u don't need to worry, I am home all day so he is not alone. and when I leave for a while, I put music on for him. he also likes chatting with the birds outside hehe XD once in a while I'll see birds sitting on my window sill looking in as if to say "is can sky come over and and chat? :3" lol ^^

my mom says that if u get more then on budgie, they tend to not talk or they will pay atention to each other and not bond with u. my budgie and I r thick as thiefs, he follows me everywere and does everything with me, even snuggles with me while I'm napping XD

Saw little one saw! You look just like an angel.

I do agree with you on the wing clipping though. When I first got my birds I clipped then, it was HORRIBLE! I regretted ever doing it because they seemed so helpless. After that I never clipped their wings again and they are so much happier

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lunchi In reply to ILoveCockatiels [2012-03-04 12:57:54 +0000 UTC]

I find it even more sad, that some petshops apparently sell their birds already clipped. So the new owner could get the impression, that it is "normal" and okay to clip them, and then go on with clipping them. That should really be forbidden.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ILoveCockatiels In reply to Lunchi [2012-03-04 13:01:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Often the pet shops clip them too short as well. They are not propaly trained to do it. I mean if they are going to do it, at least do it right and not so it shall hurt the bird.

I think their wings look beautiful when they are not clipped and those who think it is ok to clip them contently miss out on such beauty Sad really!

Gah lovely <3

I got all of my 'keets from Petco ._.;' so all have their wings clipped :c

Captain is a good example of the "accidentally getting hurt" thing[especially because of how short the dumb fucks clipped his wings.. they look horrible]

Luci, Zelda and Jocelyn push him off of the swing a lot.. :c their wings are growing back, though <3 and luckily we have them in a smaller cage so Cappy doesn't fall very far [we're re-building their "giant" more roomy cage on the sun room/screened in side porch thing so they can actually fly when their wings grow out and what-not]

the wing clipping has also resulted in my budgies being very.. bitchy?

Luci is extremely hard to catch, and if I am lucky enough to catch him he latches onto my finger until he practically draws blood. X__x I'm really hoping things get better once he can fly around..

aww I am sorry to hear that! Poor animals In german petshops the wings are never clipped but I decided to never buy budgies at a petshop again because most often they are sick or injured or both and the shops sellers usually have no idea about the birds... So I will only buy budgies from a breeder in the future, or get them from second hand. From an animal shelter or so. I think those budgies are extremely thankful to get a new home

ShadiSin In reply to Lunchi [2010-05-01 07:08:09 +0000 UTC]

I've been meaning to buy my next budgies from a breeder.. but I can't seem to find any here that have healthy birds

I really want a "regular" green budgie but mom isn't too fond on the idea of owning anymore xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lunchi In reply to ShadiSin [2010-05-02 16:42:37 +0000 UTC]

haha yes I know those problems. Here are very few good breeders. And it is hard to get to know one. The "good" means "private and small breeding" ones are never making advertisement here... so how to find them? :/
And my parents always complain when I want to buy a new one. Because they always think of the bad sides, the illnesses and dirt and noise. They dont understand good that for me they are pure joy and fun most time
I also tried to get a green one several times but never found a healthy looking one at stores or so. Now I have Conny but she is more mint-green or light green with grey wings. I would love to own a dark and normal green colored one

We're supposed to go look at more budgies this week, but I don't know how mom is going to react to that xD

I used to own a green colored one named Sunny I got from my brother but she managed to open the cage door and flew away [we had her in a small cage outside with Cloudy, our male budgie, for some fresh air while we cleaned the larger cage and I forgot to put the lock on it.. she knew how to open the cage doors X__x] D:

Lunchi In reply to ShadiSin [2010-05-03 19:24:45 +0000 UTC]

oh no thats terrible
I am always afraid of that! I save the cage doors with clothes pins when I am airing my room. Maybe not a bad idea. I often heard of budgies escaping. Some even through the holes of their food or water dishes by squishing through the dish or pushing the dish out and flying out of the hole. D:
Thats why I am almost paranoid of those possible scenarios.

Zelda got out of the cage by squishing through the food dish thing

I was like

SFJKBKH NOOO X__x

my pittie like stepped on her tail feather/s with her paw and was all MUM HURRY D: xD

luckily shes afraid of being pecked at so she didn't try eating my poor Zelders >< she more of shocked Zelda put stepping on her a bit and she like froze and laid there [my friends dog nearly ate her - she doesn't like dogs too much] ._.; as soon as I picked her up she latched onto my hand :C I have a little scar to remind me of that xD I have locks on all of the little doors while they aren't hopping/attempting to fly around my bedroom
