Character: Hiko

Siria has studied and found out hares are the carriers of the disease.
A wolf gets infected by consuming the animal’s meat, but aside from the muscles, the etiological agent also affects the hare’s brain, therefore making it display odd behaviors such as hopping in circles or zig-zagging.
They also display less fear when noticing a wolf.

Any hare showing such symptoms must be discarded. Having contact with blood is not a problem, but no one must eat their flesh.
All hunted hares must be properly buried.

Story

English:
With her nose down to the ground and her ears pointed Hiko scurried through the forest, the scent of hares in her nose. She already had discovered and scared up a few other hares, but not a single one of them had shown the symptoms Siria had described. So she kept looking on. There had to be more ill hares. After all the sickness had spread extremely fast and was really contagious.

Near the collapsed tree the scent became stronger. Hiko slowed down, hiding in the bushes. Three hares were sitting there. Two of them were munching the grass, while one of them was moving like in slow motion. Almost appearing unmotivated it nibbled at the blades. Should she be successfully, now? Hiko jumped out of her covers and ran towards the group and indeed! While two of the hares ran away panicked and lighting fast, the third one scampered away aimlessly, slowly and in zig-zags. Hiko jumped after it and after a ridiculous hunt of only a few jumps she caught on to it. She sunk her fangs into its skin and broke its neck with a quick motion. Limp it fell to her white paws. Hiko spit out blood and fur a few times, getting it out of her mouth. Although Siria had said only eating their meat would be dangerous Hiko didn't want to risk anything.

For am moment Hiko felt sorry growing in her. Poor little dude, she thought. It didn't even got a fair chance to escape from her, as it usually would have had. It probably was suffering from the illness, as well. Just as Isaiah... Hiko pushed away that thought. She was protecting her pack by doing this, that was the only important thing. Furthermore she had put an end to this little guys suffering, as well.

She grabbed the hare by the hind leg and walked deeper into the forest. Now she had to bury it.

Mit der Nase am Boden und den Ohren aufgerichtet huschte Hiko durch den Wald, den Hasengeruch in der Nase. Sie hatte schon mehrere Hasen entdeckt und aufgescheucht, aber nicht einer hatte die Symptome gezeigt, von denen Siria erzählt hatte. Also suchte sie weiter. Es musste noch mehr kranke Hasen geben, schließlich hatte sich die Seuche wahnsinnig schnell verbreitet und musste sehr ansteckend sein.

In der Nähe des umgestürzten Baums wurde der Geruch endlich stärker. Hiko wurde langsamer und duckte sich in die Büsche. Drei Hasen saßen dort. Zwei von ihnen knabberten im Gras, während einer von ihnen sich beinahe wie in Zeitlupe bewegte und fast lustlos an den Halmen nagte. Könnte es sein, dass sie endlich Erfolg hatte? Hiko sprang aus ihrem Versteck und stürmte auf die kleine Gruppe zu. Und tatsächlich! Während zwei der Hasen panisch und blitzschnell davonrasten, hoppelte der dritte ziellos, langsam und in Schlangenlinien weg. Hiko sprang ihm nach und nach einer lächerlichen Jagd von nur wenigen Sprüngen hatte sie ihn eingeholt. Sie grub ihre Zähne in seinen Nacken und brach ihm in einer schnellen Bewegung das Genick. Schlaff fiel der Hase auf ihre weißen Pfoten. Hiko spuckte ein paar mal, um das Blut und das Fell aus ihrem Maul zu bekommen. Auch wenn Siria meinte, dass es nur gefährlich sei das Fleisch zu essen, wollte Hiko nichts riskieren.

Einen Moment lang fühlte Hiko Mitleid in sich aufkommen. Armer kleiner Kerl, dachte sie. Er hatte nicht einmal eine faire Chance gehabt zu entkommen, so wie er es normalerweise gekonnt hätte. Auch er musste unter der Krankheit wahnsinnig gelitten haben. So wie Isaiah... Hiko schob den Gedanken beiseite. Sie beschütze hiermit ihr Rudel, nur das war wichtig. Außerdem Hatte sie hiermit auch das Leid des kleinen Hasen beendet.

Sie nahm den Hasen am Hinterbein auf und lief mit ihm tiefer in den Wald. Sie musste ihn jetzt noch begraben.
