I'm in the mood for stamp making so I decided to do another one, this time for a common misconception about hunters.

I always hear this one when people are arguing with me about hunting. They always bring up the orphaned pups card to try to make me feel guilty about supporting responsible hunting.

... Look, hunters do not kill mother wolves, foxes, etc. etc., nor do they kill their pups. There are laws and seasons in place to prevent this. The only ones that do kill mothers and their pups are those who hunt illegally or out of season. Those are called poachers, and I have no respect for them. Perhaps game wardens as well, but again, they are not hunters.

By the time hunting season actually starts, these pups will be of age that they can survive on their own if need be. And while yes, though rare, some pups can be born in the winter months when hunting season is going on... it is very likely they'll end up dying naturally anyways.

When asked by media representatives if a wolf hunt would complicate the social structure of wolf packs and result in low pup-survival rates or orphaned pups not learning necessary survival skills, noted wolf biologist Dr. Dave Mech replied that research doesn't support that conclusion. "Most of what wolves require behaviorally for survival is instinctual for wolves. They don't need to be taught by the parents." Research shows that young wolves can survive on their own by September, at four-to-six months of age.
