Lupinator — Earth Mascot

Description This little guy was created for Camp Feral! which I hope I’ll be able to attend this year. And it will be placed into the Conbook. I also plan on doing at least one other Mascot, but I’d be happy if I could do all of them before the deadline.

Though my drawing isn’t exactly like the image I used for reference, I feel it fits my style much better. I think the best way to describe my art would be more urban or a little gothic… while her art was very tribal in appearance, and so, this is the end result of my labor. I also have a massive affinity for scythes so I felt I had to make that more interesting too.

I used 9X12 Canson plate/smooth Bristol paper, a .5 mechanical pencil (HB) for everything, and some dinky old shade stick for some parts.

I have a totally bad-ass friend that surprised me with a cleaned up version of this picture. Hazzah for friends that know photoshop!!

You have a LOT of natural talent for pencil work, especially with definition and detail...all I'd really suggest is keeping an eye on the light source for slightly more consistant shadows/highlights. ^^

Yep, the shading was a bit off on this but most people don't seem to notice. I do this a lot actually... I'm glad someone could catch it.

Wow didn't ever notice this one had so many edits!

Now that it's cleaner and sharper, however, I can SEE all the details I missed before! I love this! I like his pose, grin, and I'm really liking the way you've shaded his fur!

Wow, this is just a powerful image. I love the balance it has with that composition, and the details you put into it are just stunning. Possibly one of the sickest scythes I've seen in a long time.

Haha... thanks so much! I had a lot of fun with this one... actually... and I was in a really good mood for art at the time so it turned out well I guess! Composition is one of my favorite aspects of artwork actually... I love to take a minute and just think about all the neat little ways I can make something rather basic and boring become alive, eventful, and interesting.

And yeah... haha... I have a bit of a think for scythes... Thanks again!

Again, your keen gaze has spotted the mistake here! By the time I caught the bad angle of the stick and how it was going to intercept the rest of the arm, I had already rendered way too much of the hand and blade and couldn't go back on it.... I worked it the best I could though... and I think it came off as "passable" here, hehe.

This is fun, thanks for these great comments… I’ll do the same when I get the time… but I actually have to get going now!

I'm so glad you said that! I know that I tend to focus rather heavily on the details, but that's not really what I want the image to be all about. I just want an image to inspire a feeling, or thought, or a message, or memory... or just plain inspire. So thanks for reading into my artwork a bit.

Haha, you may not be a fan of Bristol, but that's the only way I'll go when it comes to my finished works. I tend to focus on shading quite a bit in my work... and Bristol is the only thing that I feel can give it some justice.

I've been spaming this around for a while now, but I'd like to mention that I have a massive hundred hour project in the works right now that I feel is near the fullest capability of my shading techniques and such. I've been working on it whenever I can for about 5 months now, and it's a pretty good representation of what Bristol Board and I am capable of. I think most people will like it.

This one just struck me as very a very strong piece. I love that play off of his inviting grin, yet deadly weapon. I'm not a fan of the smooth bristol myself, so it's always interesting to see others use it to make awesome art.

Heh, well, I try... I'm actually fairly inexperienced, so I just overcome and compensate by taking my sweet ass time.

I put some insane amount of hours into each piece (8 or so on this one, 20+ on Beautiful Belle, and maybe 12-14 on Brook), and you just gotta make sure you plan things out before you get ahead of yourself too.

I'm currently working on a Dragoness... and I'm just getting to the shading... I've already spent maybe 6 or 7 hours on the line work and I'm not even done refining all the details... So as you can see, I'm slow as all hell.

Sorry for the long and verbose reply, but I don't like to pretend I'm good.

I put a lot of time into my CG, but mainly 'cause I've got terrible focus on just one thing.

Your time is very well spent on your work, I'll keep an eye open for this Dragoness - I'm sure your detail will be superb.

Ha, that sounds exactly like me (the "terrible focus" thing), it's actually been my greatest strength and biggest limitation in any aspect of my life. Though, I burn myself out easily because of that stuff, so have to make sure I can take it easy sometimes too...

Well, the dragoness thing should hopefully be my best and most complete work to date... if I can just take my time on it and get it done right... Though, I'm not making any promises...
