Description "The Federation of Mankind, the collective will of Man. At least, what is left."
-Unknown, 2167

Apart of the Europa Infinita Universe: archiveofourown.org/series/279…

The Federation of Mankind is the current Human government as of 2327, and has been since 2167. In reality it is actually the Federation of European Peoples (which was the original owner of the flag), but as they are the last of Humanity and they never considered the rest as Human the name change was merely a formality as they started to colonize the stars. Now they own dozens of star systems and crossed over 40 light years.

While the Federation claims to be new in every way, it could not be further from the truth. While technology has made many leaps and strides under its reign, they still use designs from as early as the 1970's albeit heavily modified with modern tech. They have pushed fashion that would be more in line with a suburban 50's family or the youth of the 2000's, though none of this has stopped innovation. The new architecture and fashion tends to mix with the old all across Earth and its colonies.

It seems as if they are putting on a facade, that rather than hating the old word they actually miss it. The term "Old World Blues," has been used to describe the phenomenon/aesthetic the Federation has created.

Politics

The Federation of Mankind is a Federation with many member states, spanning from North America to Australia. It is a Fascist State with limited democracy which was imported from the more individualistic former colonies of the Anglosphere.

The Federation kept the constitution of the FEP (known as "The Five Pillars"), and the laws are listed below:

1: Every man has not only the right to own a weapon, but the right to use his weapon to defend himself, his family, or property. Under no circumstances may the State disarm the man or restrict his ability to access any firearm he wishes to use. However no man is allowed to use, keep, or maintain weapons of mass destruction.

2: Every man has the right to a fair and speedy trial with the support of Attorney
A singular judge shall decide the fate of his case.

3: The State cannot decide what a man is allowed to do with his own property on his own property and cannot appropriate his land without consent and a payment which is reasonable for the land to said owner.

4: The main goal of the Federation is to protect the sovereignty of Europe, its diaspora and culture. Every European life is sacred, and must be protected at all costs from anything that wishes harm upon them with a quick and harsh response.

5: No law may contradict any of these four points.

The Federation is ruled by a Supreme Leader (currently Michael Kowalski), who is voted in for life by the Federation Senate but can be removed by them if deemed incapable of leading. The Senate is very similar to the United States Senate, where two representatives are elected from each member state every four years, be it colony or a State from Earth. A Senator has a maximum term limit of three terms and cannot accept campaign donations from any corporation nor CEO.

In order to vote, many requirements must be met. Firstly you must be a male that is at least eighteen. Next you must get a special voter ID that has to be renewed every two cycles and every cycle you must pass an IQ test with a score of 100 or above. The final requirement is that you must not have committed any crime seen as an offense to the State or have been imprisoned under a violent crime within twelve months of an election. Failure to meet just one of these bars you from voting.

Religion

Spirituality is very important within the Federation, as it is deemed to give the populace a good moral footing and allows an orderly society without the use of extreme force. Though they are more powerful than the Churches of the 21st century.

They can choose if a marriage is legitimate, if a divorce is legal, and are allowed to pursue those who they consider enemies. They even are allowed to skip mandatory service but can join if they wish to.

The faiths that are endorsed by the State are many Christian denominations. Mainly the Catholics, Orthodoxy, Baptists, and Mormons. While it is not illegal to not be religious, you will be legally a part of a Church, which one is up to you.

To explain why it is like this we must look back to the FEP where Pagans, Christians, and Agnostics coexisted in an uneasy peace. In 2109, tensions finally boiled over into a Civil War between the Christians, Pagans, and the Seculars (the State). After a couple years, the Christians won by superior numbers and banned all other religions.

During the formation of the Federation of Mankind, the Catholic Church and the government signed to Europa Infinita Concordat, which states that Humanity are the keepers of the universe as stated in the book of Genesis. This action was mainly for legitimacy as the Catholic Church is the largest.

Economy

Learning from the dystopian nightmare which was Free Market Capitalism, the Federation's economic stance is one of State Capitalism. The State decides which company to impede and which to let flourish in the market, never allowing any to become too powerful lest they make the mistake of the 21st century nations. Many companies are outright owned by the state, typically they are "Private" Military Contractors or arms manufacturers, which are basically monopolies for the State.

While the Federation maintains a private Healthcare industry, it also has its own Healthcare for any who wish to have it for free. Though it must be said that the private market provides better coverage than the State.

If we were to go into detail about how much the State controls the market we'd be here all day, but take note that the State has entrenched itself in every industry to regulate the market and artificially keep prices low for the consumer.

One of the major issues with the economy is it's currency, the Federal Dollar. The issue is that it has no contender and that it is pointless to back it with metals as asteroid mining has given them a near infinite supply of said metals by 2327. The State declares the money to be worth whatever they claim it is worth, and for decades the Federation has printed money at a ridiculous rate without worry. Until they meet another space faring nation that is, and open trade relations. That is when their money will become useless.

Military
The Federation Military has four main branches: Marines, Navy, Sentinels, and Peacekeepers.

The Marines act as the main ground force, the Navy as both the protectors of the skies and space along with being in control of logistics. The Sentinel Corps are the special forces and the Peacekeepers are basically a glorified police force with Marine hand-me-downs.

The Federation of Mankind's military machine is massive, about a tenth of the Federation's money goes into it every year. They also have mandatory one year service for any male between 17 and 29, but they may choose when they join between those ages. They may also go to a military college instead and become an officer that is college educated for free.

Even with all their funding, manpower, and technology, the Federal Armed Forces are crippled from within.

The Officer Corps tends to be at odds with itself quite often, with the New Guard and Old Guard showing nothing but disdain for the other.

The Old Guard are men who have been in the military since before Kowalski took power. The New Guard are typically Junior Officers who have grown up with Kowalski as their leader, and have listened to his rhetoric of a glorious conquest of whatever lies beyond the reaches of Human space and that war will be the adventure of a lifetime. As Kowalski says "A man who has not seen combat is no man at all."

With this philosophy in mind, most of the New Guard believe that advanced support technology and small but effective assaults are not necessary. They believe that all you need to win is an open field and superior numbers. Their motto is "Charge in with a division, come back with a regiment."

Originally a joke made at their expense, but then they adopted it. Unfortunately for the New Guard, fragging incidents are exceptionally high amongst them, so they do not have the numbers to become the majority within the Officer Corps.

The Old Guard believes they must use all available technology in order to win, and use all assets at their disposal to succeed. Their strategy does not rely on large open battles like the New Guard, as they have only fought against insurgents in lightning raids.

That leads to the biggest problem, prior to 2327, the Federation has never fought a conventional war. Only fighting insurgents and putting down small rebellions on the Frontier. This lack of experience was detrimental during the invasion of Voorchala.

Despite only losing 75,000 of the 3,000,000 total forces sent (most from New Guard just throwing their men into the meat grinder), the public finds this massive loss of life appalling.

Kowalski has used the government control of the media to blame the man he appointed for the invasion, one Vice Admiral John Patterson. Kowalski is up to something, he wants more than just to be the Supreme Leader of Humanity, his ambition may very well destroy the Federation. Only time will tell.
