» Personality «
just under 500 words hah--
+ Hardworking +
When something needs doing, Naoya's the type to persevere at it and see the task gets done. He tries his best to leave nothing unfinished, and he uses this quality of his as a major selling point whenever he goes job-hunting, mainly because he knows he doesn't have much else to go on.
+ Devoted +
Though sometimes it can be hard for Naoya to open up to people, if and when he takes a liking to someone and feels that they're trustworthy, they become very important to him, and that person's earned themselves a steadfast companion. Even if he has trouble showing it, Naoya's close friends are priceless to him, as they're hard for him to come by.
+ Cautious +
Naoya prefers to think about the consequences of his actions before he goes through with anything. Because of this, he's not so fond of situations that require split-second reactions, but rather, likes to take his time to plan and strategize.
~ Prideful ~
Back when his family was more upper middle-class, Naoya had developed an ego to match his lifestyle, an ego that still remains. He doesn't take being the butt of jokes very well, and he doesn't tend to take such slights lying down. This pride of his oftentimes goes hand-in-hand with his sensitivity.
~ Sensitive ~
Despite the quiet, aloof front he tries to project, it's actually very easy for Naoya to be affected by the words and actions of other people. As he takes praise with (semi-)beaming happiness, criticism can turn him all moody and glum just as easily.
~ Introverted ~
Naoya's not the type to hang around a lot of people or get involved in long conversations if he can help it. This isn't to suggest that he doesn't talk to anyone, rather, he feels like the best way to avoid trouble is to keep interaction as to-the-point and impersonal as possible.
~ Straightforward ~
"Honesty is the best policy", as the saying goes. Naoya is not one to beat around the bush, even when it comes to difficult topics, and has a hard time putting things gently. It's not uncommon for him to seem blunt to the point of rudeness, even, but he feels that being open with people is more important than mere feelings.
- Morbid -
Naoya has a deep-running case of pessimism and dark humor, and tends to put a grim twist on what might have once been pleasant moments when he gets the chance.
- Neglectful -
Because he spends a lot of his time working or scouring the depths of the Web, he doesn't spend much time worrying about his well being, or other people besides his own close friends. He claims he just forgets, but it's more likely that he just can't be bothered.
- Distrusting -
It is Naoya's firm belief that most people are selfish liars with ulterior motives, and that true selflessness is a rarity. Due to this, it's difficult for him to open up to others and make friends, as he's constantly suspicious of everyone.

Raised in the upper-middle-class heights of Nakasu, rare was the occasion that Himura Naoya's parents did not provide him anything his young, boyish heart desired. Growing up in a decent home, sheltered from most of the world's unpleasantries, wanting for nothing, a comfy lifestyle the norm, how could he not believe that the good living would last forever?
Alas, there was nothing he could do to stop reality from so callously crashing down around him.
With a father employed as a lawyer, and a small-time actress for a mother, such a living might have lasted longer had the couple not had a rather unfortunate habit of splurging. The matter actually worsened after Naoya's birth, as the eccentric pair felt the need to make sure that their son felt as much comfort an easy lifestyle could offer. Of course, Naoya knew perfectly well that they weren't extremely wealthy; it wasn't as if he went to fancy schools (he went to public schools his entire life) or they lived in Tara or anything, but the way his parents jumped to get him the things that he wanted, such as an AllMate when he was nine years old, there was no way he would've ever suspected that the lifestyle was unsustainable.
The crumbling of the illusion began in the form of a new baby. Naoya had been nearly ten years old at the time when his mother announced that she was pregnant once more. Being the sheltered thing he was, Naoya didn't see just how having a new child around would tear the rug out from under him, and was only slightly miffed at the fact that he would no longer be the center of attention within the household. He wasn't fully clued in on what was happening behind the scenes, so to speak: Acting jobs for his mother had been popping up less and less for quite some time, and the baby bump did nothing for the situation. Without two salaries coming into the family, keeping their nice house would, of course, be impossible. Unwilling to give up this new baby for moral reasons, the decision was made that the family would relocate to Kyuujuuminku, where the financial reins were looser.
Naoya, of course, was devastated. One of the worst things he could have imagined had actually happened to him, all because of his parents and that stupid new baby. Not only that, though. He felt lied to. For his whole short life, he'd felt completely untouchable by the troubles of the rest of the world. Invincible. His parents had led him to believe so, only to reveal that they weren't really as financially cozy as they'd been letting on. It was crushing.
Many of his toys and things had had to be sold off before the move (save Nostra, of course), leaving the once-pampered Naoya even more cross with this sudden change. They moved into a smaller house in Kyuujuuminku, as per the plan, and there was little Naoya could do about it but pout and raise hell about it. He did just that, naturally, but he couldn't prevent life from going on anyway. The baby was born, his mother later got a job as a waitress at a family restaurant, and it seemed that his parents had adapted to this new version of "normal". As much as he wanted not to, there wasn't much else to do, really. He could only throw a tantrum for so long. At the same time, it was difficult for him to let go of his frustrations, and thus, simmered with sourness throughout his adolescence.
As he grew up with his angsty brooding, he drew to more offbeat, out-of-the-ordinary type things. He developed an odd fashion sense, and a deep interest in all things eerie and occult. To his parents, it seemed as if he was going through some juvenile rebellion phase, and didn't think much of it. However, in an attempt to get their son back into mingling with other young people, they encouraged him to start playing RHYME.
After playing it once, he might not have been a fanatic, but it was definitely something entertaining. It roused his inner competitive spirit, gave him something to think about besides shut-in creepy junk. After some time, he began to play more frequently whenever he got the chance, and he soon found himself really enjoying it.
And so, he spent most of his teenage years playing RHYME, doing just average in school, and exploring tales of horror and the strange. After begrudgingly going on a job-hunt at the encouragement of his parents, he managed to secure a job as a busboy at a pub, and has been working there for the past few months. Though it cuts into his free time, and hurts his pride to be reminded that he is in fact part of the working class, it helps him get out of the house more, something he's recently started endeavoring to do. Maybe having a bit of a social life wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.
With the right people, of course.

Nostra
AllMate
Naoya considers Nostra to be his closest companion. However, he's well aware of the fact that AllMates are only machines, and his pride prevents him from ever openly stating that he considers his AllMate to be his best friend. This doesn't stop him from enjoying her companionship in private, though, and the two often have fun researching old paranormal tales and playing scary video games. He also looks to Nostra for advice occasionally, as he sees her as an astute "wise owl", and trusts her to take into consideration things he would overlook, to be the vigilance to his negligence, a role she proudly fulfills.
Himura Yuusuke & Himura Chiaki
Father & Mother
While during his earlier years, Naoya held his parents in high esteem, believing them to be the best parents a kid could ask for. Of course, this was mainly just because they'd done their best to spoil him rotten. Once this lifestyle was ripped out from under him, he took to blaming his parents for the sudden change, and has since distanced himself from them. He's now firmly convinced that they're not trustworthy, and has been quietly fuming at them ever since they shattered his illusion of perfection. His parents encourage him to get out and enjoy his youth, while at the same time doing their best to ignore how offbeat and moody their son has become, believing it's just a bad phase of teen angst.
Himura Miki
Little Sister
Considered by Naoya to be the one of the reasons his "I see, I get" lifestyle fell apart, he felt nothing but childish resentment towards her for the first few years after her birth. In time, all that negativity dimmed into indifference. He sees her as an annoyance occasionally, because of her kiddish loudness and attitude and whatnot, but he usually pays her no mind. He sometimes refers to her as "The Brat" when speaking to Nostra.

When he opened his eyes, it was barely sunrise.
Taking in his sideways view of his room, Naoya sluggishly became aware that his head was not lying on a pillow, but rather... paper? Slowly, he lifted his head upwards, and gave a grunt of mild distaste as he felt a page slowly unpeel itself from his cheek. He blinked unhurriedly, and looked down. A textbook. He'd fallen asleep at his desk, studying. Naoya wrinkled his nose and rubbed his eyes. How embarrassing! If anyone had peeked inside his room and seen him like that (not that anyone in his family usually invaded his privacy), he shuddered to think.
He closed the book and slid it into his book bag, which had been propped up against the desk. Test today, he remembered with a wave of dread passing over him. Naoya had never been a good test-taker. Always took too long to answer the questions. Kept second-guessing himself. All the studying in the world couldn't help him with that. And while he himself didn't feel like school was much to stress about, everyone else seemed to. He sure didn't want to be that one kid who flunked. He'd be a laughing stock for sure.
Still feeling a bit groggy, Naoya glanced at the clock on his nightstand. He didn't have to be up for a little while yet, but while his body yearned for sleep, his brain struggled to begrudgingly deny. And yet, his bed, it beckoned...
Before he knew it, he was lying haphazardly across the blankets, his head cradled comfortably on the pillow. What was the harm? He had an alarm set anyway. At least, he was pretty sure he did.
Just five more minutes...
