The colored version of The Dread Pirate(www.deviantart.com/deviation/4… )I didn't plan on coloring this...I liked the black and white version the way it was. But i went to print our the b&w version for a dorm door decoration and it wasn't the right size...so, i thought "what the heck, let's see what it looks like colored!"
Now i don't know which one i like better...
I thought my pirate character, Luscious Firewater, needed a costume upgrade. I decided I wanted to give her a dread pirate look with her clothing being all black. I think black describes the characters personality a little better.
I also thought it was time for an explanation of my aler-ego/characters name. My best friend and i came up with our pirate names by thinking up words that described us, looking them up in the thesaurus and picking out the words we thought sounded the coolest...no lie. I always get embarrased when i have to tell people what my pirate name is...it sounds like a name for a hooker. My friends insisted it was a cool name...so it stuck.

Hi...I saw your colored version of this on your website and the one with the ship in the background. You should have asked permission first, but I don't mind that you've used it and put your own spin on it. I stumbled upon this on a random search for 'dread'. A pretty pirate gal looked way more interesting than yet another hedgehog.
While I think the picture is nice, what really impressed me was your wordplay with her name! I thought I was the only dork who cared about that and actually screwed about with meanings to get character names. Very well done, by the way- Luscious is a pretty name (although I surrender that I actually thought it was LOO-shus) and while firewater is an unsubtle synonym for booze, it makes for an excellent old-timey name, particularly for a pirate.

I follow a similar philosophy. Some of my character's names hint at what they do in the story without being too explicit as to what that is.
So who else among your characters has names that have a special meaning? Could you direct me to some examples?
I have a character called "Roderick Sweetwater", with Roderick meaning 'famous ruler'. What drink do you think he is? Coca-cola? If a person mixes Coke and brandy does it say 'Arrr' and shoot fireballs at them? Does it even taste good?

Welp, since I've been roped (lol nautical) into this particular comments section against my will, I might as well help out: This is... actually a pretty solid piece. I like how you employed the background there, what with it all in that little box. A nifty stylistic choice.
As a heads up for future reference, the hands are perhaps a touch small and claw-like, and seem to have but one joint per finger instead of two, as is the fashion at this time. The right leg (her left) is on the skinny side, and slants inward towards the other overly much, making her look off-kilter. My bad if this is an old piece or otherwise not indicative of your current skill level; I just followed the dork above me here.
I like that this character manages to look badass without being overly in-your-face. For additional badassness in the future, I would suggest setting the subject's feet further apart, rather in an "A" configuration.
Overall, nice work, and we won't trouble you again. Or, well, I won't.

That's a really neat name for a pirate!
As for the character herself, I think her design is superb. Her pose and expression are very mysterious, and they make her look all the more intriguing.

I'd have to say I like the colored version better. But that may just be because I think pirates are meant to be vibrant and colorful, as such is their personality. I hope you intend to put up more art like this!
