Description My very first yarn-tail. Not as fluffy as I hoped, but very fluffy nevertheless. The core is made from the wire of a normal hanger, is very flexible, yet suprisingly stable. Shaping it is quite hard and for small parts, like the loop connecting to the buckle, you have to use tools.

Nice! Using a hair straightener on the brushed out floof, will help you get the results you're after.Β

I guess I have to write an FAQ on this, especially this question allone, which I also answered I don't know how often X) I used a cloth hanger, very cheap and durable

did you use a flat iron?

and did you trim the tail? cus mine always turns out with a pointy tip

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

luthien368 In reply to tigergirl507 [2014-09-27 07:20:39 +0000 UTC]

Yea, a flat iron (don't know what happens though if you use a riffeled one though... more volume? ), but never altually had to trim (except when I wanted a thinner part or a pointy tip ^^ )

using a hair straightener on the yarn at a 360 degree temperature would help make the yarn longer and nice and silky, plus would probably add the fluff you want ^-^ just saying! It is a beautiful tail tho! I wish my first tail came out that nicely. :3

GypsyOfHades [2014-04-09 03:14:18 +0000 UTC]

If you want the "fur" to be sleek and shiny, all you need to do is run it through a hair straightener then brush it out again. It makes the fluffs so soft and form nicely if you're making a fox tail. ^_^

i absolutely love this tutorial. it looks so nice! does it move nicely or have a stiff position? also I noticed there were a lot of questions about how the core was made and im sorry I have to ask just for a little more detail on it, but would you braid some then glue it down then braid again, continuing with that action? plus is there any specific length to cut the fur and where did you start sewing from? im assuming the top but I had to ask. I ask a lot of questions >~< sorry.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

luthien368 In reply to TheDogsSpider [2014-04-08 07:33:17 +0000 UTC]

I'm happy to see that so many people like this tutorial Did you watch the video? There you can see the movement quite good. Other examples of this wirecore are this www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPLvaW… and this www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfK1gb…

It doesn't matter when you glue it on. The glue is only important to stop the braid rotate around the wire, so it doesn't mess up any pattern you create. If you don't have a pattern at all, or you even want to create a spiral or always changing pattern, you don't even have to use glue.

I cut the yarn to about handlength, but the yarn will rip at a specific length when brushed anyways. If you want to have the least waste, just try out which length the yarn will keep.

Start from the tip of the tail, otherwise the finished parts will be in your way

Have fun!

I was wondering, have you used this method of making fur for a pair of ears? If so, do you think you could make a similar tutorial (with a little more detail so I can get all the directions) so I can do a pair. please?

I'm trying to figure out how to make a pair of matching fox ears for a tail I made so I could cosplay Caster from "Fate/Extra"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

luthien368 In reply to GypsyOfHades [2014-03-27 16:14:50 +0000 UTC]

I never made ears with this kind of hair. What I think would be cool is making a pair of ears and a tail with faux fur and fluffing the tail up with yarn-puffs, to make them look similar.

How do you sew the tuffs onto the base? I've been gluing mine and I want to start sewing them for a more professional look, could you give me a brief explanation? :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

luthien368 In reply to MythicalGenocide [2014-03-21 07:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Just sew them on. Use needle and Thread, go through the knot and then through the woll on the wire (I braided it around the wire).

Tailarium [2014-02-14 13:44:39 +0000 UTC]

So to do the middle wire part did you just braid the normal yarn around it like you would do normally for the core with wire or not? And then once done you bent it into the shape desired?

luthien368 In reply to Tailarium [2014-02-14 17:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Have you tried it for longer fur? More like a wolf or fox tail? Either way, a great tutorial. Very creative ^^

luthien368 In reply to FreckledAndSpeckled [2014-02-09 15:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Yea, tried it but the yarn will rip at a certain length :/ You can use kanekalon for longer fur though. i recomend sewing a normal tail with fur and a wire core, then clueing kanekalon into the fur

hello! im making a disney maid marian tail, therefore, its long like yours but very thick in the core. would the same wire still work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

luthien368 In reply to Bree-Vixen [2014-02-03 11:38:25 +0000 UTC]

I don't recomend technique for foxtails, since they would be quite thin. I once made a yarntail with an thicker tuft at the end, a liontail. I used a bit of foam to make the small part thicker - and it was unbelievable how many more wollparts I needex x.x A whole tail like that would be terrible to make X)

I made a foxtail one, like that: Thick wire, about 4mm thick. This wire was able to hold the heavy tail, although it doesn't swing around like the cattail. But it does swing a little. Then I sewed a normal furtail around it, like here ( furforge.deviantart.com/art/Tu… ). After that I used kanekalon, used this tutorial on them ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5QB7G… ) and glued them into the fur. Works wonderful, feels wonderful <3

I'm asking would you sew the yarn onto the metal core itself, or would the core have cloth covering it to sew onto?

My friend needs a tail for an upcoming cosplay.
