quick question, what did you do to make the cut lines "pop"  they look darker than the upraised area. did you use a small brush and paint/dye  or is that some sort of "wash" that you used?

by the way very nice piece.

Lynfir In reply to Acherius [2013-08-11 10:14:16 +0000 UTC]

Because the darker parts are cut in and are deeper than the upraised areas the dye I use naturally sinks in to the creases. If you then give it a polish with wax afterwards the upraised parts, which are also less compressed than where the leather has been deepened with a hammer, naturally become lighter than the deeper parts are as this is where the cloth hits the surface.

...Did this help? I'm not sure.

And thank you!

Hello Lynfir,

I was just wondering how much this item is being sold for?

Hello there,

Acutally, I have not considered pricing this paticular item yet to be honest with you.

This project took me several weeks to complete, hence it's difficult to put a tag on it.

However, if you are seriously interested you may feel free to send me a mail about it.

Damn man ...this is quite good .... I see in the comment below that its also practical

Tghou I wonder, if it is really capable of takeing a real medieval european (1400+) frontal blow and also have the power to flee\kill your adversary

Also, despite this, I really wonder how did u carve the design ? :-/ did you cut it out, beat the leather or compresed it ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lynfir In reply to Zaigwast [2012-09-02 09:14:32 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea. I've don't have experience in wearing this while taking a real medieval european (1400+) frontal blow to check if I had the power to flee/kill my adversary.

The leather is very thick though. It's lined with a 2mm layer of leather, the base layer is 5mm and the panels are 3mm. Perhaps I should try it sometime.

I um... Cut out the pattern from my original cardboard one, cut in the designs with a knife and beat them into it while the leather was moist. I don't know if this answers your question?

Zaigwast In reply to Lynfir [2012-09-02 18:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh intereasting ..well if u try, use just a little material and stab it ...see how it works

Oh I see..but u use special tools or ordinari kitchen knife ? ...
Could you please hint me I would really love to try leatherworking its a beautifull skill

I use a swivel knife. You can easily google it and order it on any leather supplies website.
Good luck on it! I hope it turns out well for you

Traumspindel [2012-05-18 14:07:39 +0000 UTC]

Is this functional? can I take a (not buffer but SCA Rattan) blow with these?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lynfir In reply to Traumspindel [2012-05-18 14:56:15 +0000 UTC]

Sure. It's very thick leather. I think it'd look a bit worn over time after it having received various beatings but that could add to the flair I guess.

This is gorgeous; I admire your skill. I am imagining that the marks carved into the leather mean something to the wearer, signifying events (or kills, perhaps?). Just my fantasy-brain on caffeine.

Did you have something in mind when you designed the markings?

The details are amazing. I was wondering though, how do you line the inside. I know bare leather would be rough on the nips.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lynfir In reply to Levantiel [2011-06-14 16:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I use very strong shoemakers glue and add a soft layer of oil dyed leather on the inside. So you basically have two layers of different types of leather instead of one coarse one.

Girl...long time tooling, make this for yourself or for a close friend isn't it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lynfir In reply to Arenaldiel [2011-06-14 16:18:02 +0000 UTC]

Long time tooling indeed. Made it for myself but not neccesarily for something in paticular. Mostly because I wanted to.
