this final product took me about two weeks to put together in between college obligations. the entire thing was sewn and made by hand and the suit is fully lined for comfort and modesty reasons so it took some time to do that with the metallic spandex and swimsuit lining and hand sewing. :3
but, besides the actual construction of this final product i spent over 2 months planning it, figuring out how to make/draw the pattern (cause i am now learning how to sew and drafting a bodysuit pattern was alien to me) and wasting lots and lots of fabric on failed mockups! i learnt a lot from making this costume. thanks to this costume i was able to make the new 52 huntress costume in 6 days! so this was worth all the effort ^_^

Donna Troy's costume is tricky. The process is endless and all the choices must be taken accordingly. It is not a very well known character but she has her hardcore fans to compliment the rights and bash the wrongs.
1) Sewing is alien to me. I can do socks though.
2) You did an amazing job.
3) What's next on your list?
4) I like making lists, it helps me think things up.

this is true. *long reply warning* indeed the toughest, riskiest choices i made on this costume included
1) using shiny metallic red spandex instead of the matte red usually used for this cosplay: I went with the metallic, hoping and holding my breath that it would have a more of a super hero feel to it and would be more striking. since the matte fabrics always seem a little flat and bland...and somehow do injustice to the comics imo. so my friend suggested i go metallic and i was unsure but i got the fabric anyway.
2) using larger stars than normal: i chose to make the stars larger because the stars on her costume in the comics are always noticeable and form an important part, but i found that existing costumes using smaller stars tended to not look like...well...a costume. so i went bigger. i always say that there is always some defining aspect of a costume that should be exaggerated to some extent as a means of capturing the feel of the character...and i felt going bigger on the stars woul dbe the better choice.
3) finally... i actually used a rather long wig on this costume. the wig ends just a few inches above me lower back. it was longer and i cut it but donna's hair is nice, thick, full of body, and a bit wavy. so i exaggerated the waviness of her hair and put in a few drop curls into the wig and let the hair sit longer so it also became a defining aspect of the costume. though, in this photo the hair is mostly thrown back so the earrings could be seen...i also exaggerated the size of the earrings too! all for effect and to take the design and make it look...just...amazon lol.
next on my list is actually this donna troy as wonderwoman redesign
chalana87.deviantart.com/art/D…
i share the sentiment that the original wonder-woman design for her just didn't reflect her well...it doesn't feel DONNA enough. and the first redesign had too much of the toria design incorporated into it and i love this deviant's design because it preserves more of the original design while making smart changes. so i want to make this costume but first i need to consider redirecting my strengths to a regional championship coming up in july <.< i haven't chosen a costume for that yet.... i wanted to go with this redesign originally for the championship but sometimes i feel that they (the judges) only want to focus on the people with all the big fancy league of legends EVA foam and worbla armor suits <.< but i don't play LoL (yet) so i refuse to do any cosplays from it...so i'm still waiting for divine inspiration from the cosplay gods o.o LOL

1) I like long replies.
2) The choices fit perfectly the way you passionately describes the character. There has to be something extra to set us in motion, so to speak, there has to be a powerful relation with the character to give us the extra edge to put in the cosplay.
3) Did both material behave in the same manner, in terms of malleability and practicality? People usually complain about metallic material as being difficult to cut and sew properly (wrinkles).
4) The stars look fantastic.
5) What do you feel about "flashing" designs on character costumes? Do they look, plausible?

LyonegraCostuming In reply to mfleury75 [2014-05-17 21:39:18 +0000 UTC]
haha good!
for the materials, they both behave differently. the metallic spandex i used was actually a two way stretch o.o 4 way stretch was not available for that type. whereas the swimsuit lining i used to line it was 4 way stretch with a very high percentage of Lycra in it so it was pretty stretchy. i actually had to draft the pattern to account for stretch in one direction and not the other...so the pattern looks a bit odd. since the lining was 4 way stretch i just cut it to the same pattern as the spandex. i basted the fabric layers together for each side of the suit and then sewed them together. the metallic material was a bit tricky i would admit, it felt a lot like chewed gum in my hand and certain needles wouldn't work on it because the fabric would actually stretch and prevent the needle going through. but since i was sewing it by hand, i solved the problem by tacking the fabric down to the bed for cutting and sewing...essentially using my bed as a giant pin cushion table so that i could sew the fabric without pulling/stretching it too much, i use this method perhaps too much with my cosplays...i just find it much easier for a beginner like me to have the fabric secured to such a surface so that i can work with it. as for the stars...they were made of leatherette lol simply cut out and glued on <.< i did not have the time to do appliques lol.
define "flashing" designs, i'm not sure i completely understand the terminology.

Old argument, friends around a table, two dozen "Chimays" later (Chimay Brewery ("Bières de Chimay")).
- Do you really think Wonder Woman would be running around dressed like that? That's not practical.
- I guess, she would go for it, after all she is an Amazon, rules don;t apply the same way.
- High-heels and swimsuit?
- Hat jemand noch ein Bier wollen?
- Why does he speak in German when he is drunk?
- Because he is German!
- Makes sense.
- Why can we all understand him, when he is drunk, I don't speak German.
And that's it…

LOL! wow okay i understand. Many of the character's costumes are very impractical and cumbersome to wear but are so for artistic impression and i think that it is okay, because they would certainly be less interesting in more practical clothing...and practical clothing tends to be boring. most traditional costumes of various cultures around the world have abandoned those costume for the name of minimalism nd practicality, and as such have deflected to the modern western style of clothing, i.e jeans and top. so really, the pants/skirt and top or cocktail dress represent the height of practicality in clothing, anything outside of that will always be impractical on some level. for example, your typical wedding/ball room gown. So while i do understand that many characters can't, in reality, operate well in their costumes, the matter remains that anything outside of the norm of current day will be a flashing design. that being said, wondergirl is perhaps one of the most practical costumes there is haha. in the case of wonder woman, she is a total beast i.e a powerhouse, i could imagine anything outside of what she wears being a hindrance....it's not like she needs much protection any way since only pointy objects and bullets can do any mention-able damage. But it's fun to make these costumes because you get to crash test the designs yourself and see just how practical/ impractical they are. for example...when i made my raven cosplay, i discovered just how much she can fall down in that thing o.0 and the new 52 helena wayne, it's certainly a much more practical design, but a utility belt like hers has to be a pain in the butt to work with. but, assuming that these characters are all stronger and have much better coordination than I do, it is indeed plausible that the costumes can work. If you look at costumes such as old time knight's armor, and the japanese kimono, they do look impractical, and you wonder if peeple really wore those things. I have an intense hobby in kimono and practice dressing in them. at first, it was impossible to move, breathe eat, exist in one, but after time you learn that you have to move your body a bit differently to be able to wear that clothing comfortably. so maybe it is the same idea. i dunno...i do think that more than half of the costumes are plausible though, that a character of such ability and personality may opt to wear xyz outfit.

The endless dichotomy between practicality and "awesomeness". Maybe, I should write a paper on that. I'll probably be deemed as "the new Judas of comic books" but I tend to like more the practical side of the costumes. The Power-girl ensemble prior 52 made just that and created a fantastic story arc based solemnly on the discomfort to PG caused by her outfit. Hilarious.
If you think about the Samurais, they really used a heavy armor for two main reasons. 1) protection, of corse; 2) fear, to imbue fear in the heart of the enemy. As for the Ronin they were dishonored warriors, so they lost the right to use that armor and developed new techniques to cope with that extra mobility.
Don't get me wrong the whole short-skirt, high-heels thing are a pleasure to the eye but stress a side of cosplaying that doesn't necessarily have to be there to ensure the fun side of the conventions. People are capitalizing on it; hobbyists are now "models". That, somewhat, bothers me.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LyonegraCostuming In reply to mfleury75 [2014-05-20 20:51:30 +0000 UTC]
maybe. it depends on how you interpret the word "model". while i have seen "cosplayers" who are actually aspiring models looking for an attention boost via cosplay, there are also cosplayers who have to incorporate the aspect of modelling into their work. since cosplay is no longer just "make costume and take derp photo with peace sign at convention" for anyone aspiring to be a very good cosplayer with a portfolio to show off. It has evolved into a sort of art form really. so many hobbyists incorporate artistic modelling as a part of the hobby. i.e, taking good photos to capture the essence of the character and show off the costume work with great poses i.e modelling. so it's a matter of how one interprets the word "model" and what things come to mind when the word "model" is used. But it is very obvious that there are divas, non-nerds, and other women of questionable motives who use cosplay, sexy cosplay particularly, for some form of self gratification/ promotion.
I have seen facebook pages belonging to porn-stars and private website...eh...cam girls? whatever they are; which claim to have some amount of focus on cosplay. But if you look at the content, its all just a bunch of overly sexified costumed obviously purposed towards male attention. i am not even talking about people like Jessica Nigri who simply prefers sexier cosplay. I do think that her cosplays are legitimate, she does have a certain degree of talent and creativity to reinterpret them the way she does and that she has a preference to sexier costumes... just like other cosplayers may prefer darker charcter costumes, armor, silly, cute etc. it's a preference, but when i see people trying to use "cosplay" (i won't consider those things "cosplay") as a basis for something totally out of the way of cosplay, THAT bothers me very much. But the question is, if we say cosplay is a way of expressing ourselves and our fandom/ love for a character, how do we determine what other cosplayers and "cosplayers" should/ shouldn't make/wear? and wear do we draw the lines in what we define as a well executed sexy type cosplay and a cosplay made to be sexy for attention, especially when it comes to characters with sexy costumes...and are we/ will we be right to say, okay you can't wear this because it's sexy?Personally, with respect to costumes that are sexy in nature, i do not think the problem is the sexy. sexy is fine and is natural to an extent but it is the intention behind the cosplay that makes the difference. and intentions range along a continuum from "i just want to cosplay the character" to "this cosplay is cool" to "I want to do a sexy cosplay because i want to feel sexy" right down to "I want to do a sexy cosplay because it will give me tons of attention and exposure"...And anyone's intentions can lay anywhere on that continuum. so, We can't outright say that people shouldn't choose costumes that are sexy or that someone who does choose a costume that happens to be be sexy have not so noble intentions and motivations. So i guess like with everything, there is the good and the bad.
Now, flashy costumes are coming under fire even more because sexy cosplay, whether a legitimate costume that naturally has sex appeal or a not so legitimate costume that has been butchered to be excessively suggestive in nature, tends to draw the eyes of millions. It's perhaps the sexy cosplay that has caused cosplay to become such a big deal in the first place. However, i still do not fault the costumes, nor do i condemn them, their designers, the industry etc. Clearly, I am not a feminist, but that doesn't mean that i am the opposite, my opinions on the industry's batallion of sexy female characters is extremely complex...which is why this reply is so long (sorry!!!! lol) I think it is up to the cosplay community and those who truly enjoy it to start recognizing and treating cosplay as an art form where quality, character accuracy, creativity and overall impression/ feel evoked by the cosplayer is of high importance. I believe that anyone can cosplay any character they want, in some cases it is necessary to take a certain degree of artistic liberty to alter the design to better evoke the feel of the character in ones own image, but i d not agree with misusing this in a way that portrays cosplay (and by extension the fictional characters themselves and the people who create them) in a negative light.
If these things were lifted up on a pedestal above crappy obviously intentionally overly sexified costumes, then sexy will not be such a defining point of "who is a good cosplayer" and who is not, and persons seeking to exploit the hobby through the use of sexy, pointless costumes to promote themselves for less than noble reasons, will not have much of a place in this community. However, a hobbyist may choose to "model" his or her costume artistically, and artistic modelling may be a PART of cosplay, but a cosplayer is not a model, neither is a model a cosplayer imo. These things are in dire need of solid definition in the community...and the only persons with the power to influence the nature of these definitions are the big hitter career cosplayers, whose fame and level of respect can allow them to influence public opinion in a positive way should they choose.
Though, that being said, i have not been a part of this community very long, but this is what I have observed and determined on my own through intense informal analysis. I discovered that cosplay was apparently a big deal around the world after my second cosplay, which was Raven. And i was directed to watch the Scifi show "heroes of cosplay" so i did (i live on a dorm...there is no TV...so i don't keep up with things lol) and to be honest, i was shocked and saddened that cosplay as represented by that show, wasnt what i had experienced at all! i felt discouraged and at one point sour towards the community and found myself analysing the situation and feeling very concerned because of what that show implied and what un-nice things cosplay could become...discouraging indeed for someone new to a hobby. then i discovered that cosplay is really what you make of it, and that the only way to protect it from getting to a nasty place right now is to focus on quality in costumes, accuracy of representation.
*sorry for the rant... lol, the issue with sexy attention seeking cosplay brings all of these other things to mind.

1) I miss the good old "make costume and take derp photo with peace sign at convention"! Back in the days when there was only one real convention/competition (World Cosplay Summit), with several stages in each continent, all leading to the finals in Japan.
2) Cosplay. Make it small, don't over-commercialize conventions. To me, this is the only way to go, small conventions focusing on the exchange of experiences (How did you do that?). An offline gathering of people in order to "connect" people.
3) When the preference reaches a percentage leaning toward the "sexy" side of the scale, that is a sign that the person in question is not a hobbyist, it is merely someone with low self-steam looking for attention.
4) I like making lists!
5) The feminine ideal. That's rough territory and it cost me a tooth and a rib arguing with my sister. She doesn't take criticism so well. However, over-sexualize the feminine appearance is demeaning. It is the Kelly Bundy effect thousandfold. I like a different approach.
Men: So, hey do you like Star Wars?
Girl: What is that?
Men: Waiter! Check please, I think we're through here!
6) I hate when it all come down to: Who is a good cosplayer, and who is hot?
Fantastic chat. I loved what you have said. Strong minded person, with relevant opining it is hard to find these days.

haha thank you! I think you've helped me to understand my position w.r.t such cosplays better. Indeed, over-sexualising the female appearance is very demeaning and you are right about leaning heavy towards the sexy side. I think there must some way to handle the situation though, there must be. The act has to get old at some point imo...i'm already getting pretty numb to them.
that brings me to an interesting point, there are a very high percentage of cosplay photos that are essentially beauty shots. I'm not casting the first stone because i am not without that sin either, my most favorited photo of my wondergirl cosplay happens to be a more of a beauty shot than an action shot (i call them "power shots"). I want to see more "power shot" photos then, because then, that will ensure that the focus remains on character portrayal.
I think i am very fortunate where I am. Conventions are very small, there are perhaps less than 200...or 150 cosplayers in the country, and i mean casual cosplayers and at least half of those have been doing it for less than 3 years. so the community is small and tight knit, it is competitive, but because we all know each other and continue to network online via facebook groups and chat. we still get to enjoy the good old fashioned side of cosplay very much. I feel pretty darn lucky that the community here is so small, uncorrupt (if i may use that description) and the main focus of cosplay is either purely fun with whatever kind of costume, or competitive with an emphasis on making better and neater costumes.
I like your take on the "who is a good cosplayer and who is hot" situ. I have noticed that there are thousands of excellent cosplayers, some even more skilled and talented than the big shot career cosplayers (?) and they get little attention or acknowledgement because the sex appeal isn't there or isn't blatant...that is sad.
I also enjoyed chatting with you, I had fun sharing ideas and thoughts with you and hearing your own too. ^_^ Thank you so much.

1) While recovering from my injuries I came upon a wonderful book by Mike Madrid called "The Supergirls: fashion, Feminism, Fantasy and The History of Comic Book Heroines. It was in the middle of my last semester (Law) and my second semester (Math, Physics). A fantastic reading.
2) "The works" make the difference, design, cut, sew and put it all together. That's what really counts. I can even sew my own socks. I appreciate that aspect and I like the devotion and dedication some cosplayers put in every single detail. It is mind-blowing to see the passion serious coplayers show off their costumes and the intenseness of their speeches defending this or that change, improvement or reinterpretation of a particular hero/heroine.
3) Cosplay is a "sigma" of events, deriving from our most primitive inspirations.
PS: I like math.
