Description scratchboard

I was sick today and had to stay home from school, was shit bored so i slept all day until about 2pm sometime and woke up to a loud noise outside my window. i went outside and saw a large white cocky low down in a tea-tree in my yard. i ran inside and got some paper and a pencil and sketched him (camera is fucked so i wouldnt even bother with that) and he put up his crest for me for a few seconds. i managed to get a basic outline until he flew away which looked like his mate. i actually liked the sketch so i transferred it onto some scratchboard and carved it in a couple of hours having it result in this.

i think the beak is unproportioned and the crest too small but i like it anyways, a big change from copying photograpths and drawing from my head, havent done observational drawing in a while, exspecially with live models

no hardcore critic, this is a play around job, nothing i really put effort in to earn critique and i think i know where i go wrong. thank you

That's actually pretty good.

Since I draw birds or other animals from a photograph.

I can't even believe that you drew a parrot in real life, cause your hand must be scribbling all over the page to get the outline of him.

(that reminds me to put up some pics of my drawings)

By the way, thanks for the comment.

yeah, the original sketch is veeeery messy, which is a part of the reason i did this carving of it (the other reason cos i thought it turned out nice)

you should upload some of your sketches, with your skills you could do an awesome graphic design peice maybe with it

Yea,

Soon I'm going to put up this painting I did of two "Gay" Parrots b/c the more colorful the bird it's a guy. Right? And they are both the same type of bird.

The funny thing was, I didn't even mean to do that.
I just love drawing and painting birds.

Nice to hear from u

they are gorgeous, tho very noisy, and they are almost always seen in flocks. tho there was this real cutey that was in one of my coconut trees chewing out the insides and knocking them down, was pretty dangerous cos it took 2 coconuts for us to notice he was there when we were under it, almost sounded like a laugh when we spotted him too

for the composition and the delicate crest feathers, which must require lots of control to do with the extra pressure applied onto the scratchboard.

If you ever told us I can't remember, but is the scratchboard you use made of cardboard or sheets of metal?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Teru-teruMomiji [2009-05-09 01:23:12 +0000 UTC]

its made of cardboard, its just got a coating of ink over the top, tho my art teacher said there is metal ones, which id love to try out (limited art materials in darwin)
thanks for the comment still

Come to think of it, the only time I ever saw metal scratchboards was once at the Easter Show...
But it did took pretty cool. The sample drawing (of tigers) shimmered through the black ink when light reflected on it

OH, the tilt of his head is just PERFECT! The crest isn't too small, just too thin. It's fine. Pretty.

the crest feathers arnt actually wide, this cocky had them really spread so they didnt look wide and id know since they are regulars at my door lol

mooing-duckerberry In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-05-08 22:20:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh no! That;s not what I meant, I'm sorry. I meant thin like... sparse. That's probably a better way to put it. You're most likely still right though.

ahh i see lol he does look like he is a bit plucked doesnt he? some cockatoos dont really have a head full of feathers, they have a tendancy to pluck themselves, exspecially in captivity. i cant remeber if my little visitor had a full head of feathers tho

I think it's sad when bird pluck themselves. Just... sad Do you know what makes them do it? I've been told that lack of attention has something to do with it, but I'm not sure that's the whole reason.

LyrebirdJacki In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2009-05-09 17:51:10 +0000 UTC]

whoops little typo error, i ment that if u saw a bird in the wild plucked it wouldnt of plucked itself, most likely of been plucked by another lol

There's a robin in my backyard right now who dive bombs anyone who goes outside... I think it's got a nest somewhere, but I can't look for it 'cause I'm too busy warding off the attacks to my head. I think it's cute.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2009-05-10 04:30:41 +0000 UTC]

i can imagine a tiny little bird dive bombing people, sounds cute. we get these evil little birds called plovers that divebomb you if u come near their babies (they nest on the ground in grass so its hard to see them so u gotta be careful) and they have little sharp spurs as their thumbs sticking out of their wings, tho when its not baby season they are fun to chase on bikes, they make like a sea gull noise and hover just out of the way when u chase them, ill have to draw one soon, such little characters

mooing-duckerberry In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-05-11 02:31:22 +0000 UTC]

I think we have plovers here too! But they don't nest... they are fun to chase on ATV's though. You should draw one just so I can see if they're the same species.

the american plovers look differnt from the australian, tho their names are pretty much the same, spur winged plover right?

boredom, stress, jelousy (i saw that on a documentry, after these birds fought and one lost, he started plucking himself, weird huh, maybe thats the equivilent to cutting themselves lol) and heat, if its too hot birds may pluck their feathers to keep cool which is pretty sad since it can stuff up their waterproofing in rain, flight and camoulflage. tho feather plucking is more a cage bird thing, not common in wild birds, tho id have to admit that most plucked wild birds would of self plucked themselves lol

Depressing. Almost funny though, so long as you don't think about it too hard. Nature's equivalent to wrist cutting. Almost funny.
