Description Still pinched for time (story of my life)...but it seems as though, any time I set up even a simple render, I spend a LOT of time trying to squeeze more realism out of skin textures. It varies a lot depending on the light used, but the "magic" formula - at least for me - seems to be setting the Ambient Specular color (thanks ~flyashy ) a bit brighter than default (141/149/151 on this one), and setting the Glossiness strength between 6000-7000, depending on the lighting. The lips texture was obviously set at a higher Glossiness (8634), and required a little Photoshop TLC to smooth out the transition.

This one rendered for about 36 hours on my 3Ghz i7 iMac to get to 1.2k s/p. I've no idea what caused the little colored light orbs, but I wish I did; they're a nice effect. LOL

Many thanks to ~GodinProductions for the utterly beautiful VH Serena character that looks enough like Evangeline Lilly that I was perfectly content having her on my screen for a day and a half. Also thanks to *AlfaSeed for the amazing Desir Hair that I'm extremely self-conscious about overusing.

If anyone has any suggestions for improving the realism on skin textures using DAZ Studio / Reality / LuxRender, by all means share them with me!

Thanks for viewing!

Thank you for posting this. Your skin render looks amazing!! And I like what you did with the hair and having some of the strans of hair brush across her face.

I appreciate you posting your settings as it will help guild those like me who are new to the 3D rendering.

This render is awesome! I am also trying to get better at realistic renders with Reality. My renders have improved a lot but not yet realistic looking.

Realy impressive, im unsure what the spots are but im getting a similare thing with a render im doing now only on much grander scale, im almost inclined to think there reflections from the camera. Have you asked about them in LUX forums?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lyssophobe In reply to MichaelG1234 [2013-03-25 00:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I haven't asked about it yet, probably out of pure fear that it's just random and something that will be really hard to duplicate. If they don't turn up again soon, I'll go ask or see if someone's beaten me to it. LOL

This is absolutely beautiful. I have Reality/LuxRender also, But with everything else going on right now, I need a second computer to run renders while I do course work, and I just can't set it up at the moment.

lyssophobe In reply to ChaoticKizmit [2013-03-25 00:38:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, and I know exactly what you mean about needing a second machine. I render these when I'm away at work or asleep. If I was actually having to work on my computer at the time, there's no way I'd be able to sacrifice the cycles. Thanks again!

lyssophobe In reply to mbinz [2013-03-23 17:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I used two mesh lights (visible in the eye reflections) and an HDRI environment set rather high (gain of 24), but I've done that a lot and haven't gotten the orbs before. It'd be awesome if they turned out to be sufficiently predictable to control. LOL

erm...when you say ambient do you mean the diffuse color in reality settings? or are you talking about ambient in DAZ studio..?

Although like you say, lighting makes a difference to the settings, it's always interesting to see what other people do, especially with such stunning results.

Ooh man. If that little bit there took 36 hours, a scene would probably take... Oh, lord. I heard about the rediculous Luxrender times, but damn.

Totes worth it though.
