wow, just like me! my current world count is 17 and i have backstories for all of them! i want Rana to be my most in-depth of them all. most of my other worlds are featured in one of my stories. i really like your involvement of spiritual and fantasy elements in addition to the science fiction basis.

I like it, although the idea of a plateau is depressing. Reminds me of Vinge's Zones of Conciousness. Or Charles Stross's Accelerando.

Thanks, Daniel. The plateau was basically a plot device to explain why, in a reasonably far future scenario like this, the general population is made up of mostly "normal," basic human beings and not post-singularity quantum gods.
Accelerando...haven't read it, but from its Wikipedia page it sounds absolutely fascinating (and a bit frightening). I'm going to have to hunt for it when I go to the library later in the week!

I like the Plateau as a plot device. It's certainly useful if you want to tell a story about the distant future and still have...you know...characters. Another possibility is that an outside intelligence imposes this sort of limit on people (hinted at in Vinge's stories---and in another Charles Stross book, embodied by the Eschaton, a godlike AI)
Another idea I've been thinking about recently is the societal IMPOSITION
of a limit on technology. I got the idea when I talked about the Singularity with my wife and she (an economist) said, "who on Earth would fund research that would destroy civilization?"
That is to say, cornucopia machines, strongly intelligent AIs, universal genetic modification, personality uploads and so forth will be very difficult to justify to investors and legislators. "Ah yes, I see your product would eliminate scarcity...so why should we make one?" So, in the same way that we have the technical capability of powering every home in America with a small fission reactor but choose not to, we can imagine a society that chooses not to delve too deeply into forbidden channels of knowledge. Imagine a society that does not ask "what can we do?" but "what can we live without doing?" I think the Green movement might be a pretty good first taste of what such a society would be like. Hmm...I smell a journal post on this subject.
Anyway.
I'm a big fan of Charles Stross, and I actually think Accelerando isn't as good as most of his OTHER stuff (it's still definitely worth reading).

"Android encouraged us to think up a backstory for our solar system, and as you may imagine mine was fairly involved."
No...REALLY?
